Bet of the day: All eyes on Lingfield

Frank Monkhouse | 20 January 2017

Friday’s punt of the afternoon goes at Lingfield

Lingfield hosts a competitive card on the polytrack to get punters in the mood for the weekend. Six-races get going from 1.00pm, with a tight little seven-furlong handicap shaping as the first puzzle worth solving.

Our bet of the day goes in Surrey but we are mere spectators until the point of interest, the 2.35pm six-furlong handicap, goes to post. 10-runners are expected to make up the field, but the one that has caught my eye, and stake money, is Gentlemen.

Grendisar

A Gentlemen and a winner

Phil McEntee prepares his experienced six-year-old gelding for what will be race-28 of his career, and there’s reason to believe it’ll end with a visit to the winner’s enclosure, the eighth on his CV. Gentlemen has been knocking on the door of late, finishing outside of the top-three only once in his last five starts, with the form reading two seconds, two thirds and that one blot, an eighth at Newcastle when never in the race. I’m happy to put a line through that and move on.

The selection was seen competing last Tuesday, ending as a gallant runner-up behind Pretend at Kempton over today’s trip. He endured no end of problems that day, and seemed to expel a lot of energy finding a gap in the field. When getting the room he did impress however, leading at the business end before being caught close home. With a clearer path, and a bit more luck, who knows what might’ve happened. That’s horse racing for you.

Doncaster day 1

The price is right

Gentlemen found only Charlie Appleby’s Pretend too good on that occasion, but faces nothing in that sort of class today and a similar effort will see him go close again. Jockey Callum Shepherd returns to the saddle following last week’s outing and that must go as another positive.

Coral are offering a chunky price of 15/2 on Gentlemen at the time of writing and that is sure to attract a flurry of activity in the betting ring. More cautious punters could have an each-way stab at 1/5 the odds 1-2-3.
