Shearer says: “Westwood and Kaymer are key players for Europe in the Ryder Cup”
Coral football ambassador Alan Shearer is a keen golfer, and he can barely contain his excitement for the 2016 Ryder Cup that starts on Friday, September 30th.
In the latest of a series of interviews with our own Simon Clare, we asked Shearer all about this team event. Hear more about Alan’s Ryder Cup plans in the video below:
“I can’t wait!” an excited Shearer said. “It’s just such an iconic sporting event. The pressure is huge on the players both America and Europe.”
Westwood and Kaymer are Europe’s key players
When asked who he felt the key players at Hazeltine National will be for Europe during the Ryder Cup, Shearer added: “You have to look to the experienced guys. In that, you’d have Lee Westwood and you’d have Martin Kaymer.”
“I’m sure the rookies have been spoken to this week and been told what to expect, but it’ll be totally different to whatever they’ve sampled before.
“It’s not just putting a ball on a tee and hitting it,” Shearer continued as he recalled how the pressure mounted on some players at Gleneagles two years ago. “We actually saw one or two of the American golfers sky it off the first tee!
“That tells you what pressure these guys are under. I was asked to send a message this week to the Europe team, and my message was that pressure is for tyres.”
