Shearer shares his thoughts on Chelsea’s title credentials and derby against Tottenham

Coral sat down with ambassador Alan Shearer to exclusively discuss Chelsea’s title credentials and their London derby against Tottenham this weekend.

You can listen to Shearer’s Chelsea thoughts in the video below, but we’ve also picked out the best quotes from this latest interview…

“I would fully expect them to go the distance”

Shearer, the Premier League’s all-time leading scorer, has backed Chelsea to continue their title tilt and battle for the Premier League until the very end: “Their system with three at the back is suiting them down to the ground, they’re not conceding goals. Of course [Eden] Hazard and [Diego] Costa are in fine form, so I would fully expect them to go the distance.”

Former Newcastle United striker and Prem winner Shearer has also cited lack of European football as a factor of their success, after failing to reach the Champions League places last season due to a disastrous campaign: “With them having no European football on a Tuesday or Wednesday night, it is without doubt a big help to both Chelsea and Liverpool.”

Spurs “should go into the game with confidence”

After winning six league games on the trot and conceding zero in that time, Shearer is relishing the all London clash against Tottenham: “I’m really looking forward to that game, Spurs didn’t play well at all last weekend, were slightly fortunate, scoring two goals in the last 2-3 minutes to win the game, then poor again in Europe.”

However, despite a loss to Monaco midweek in the Champions League, Shearer has backed Mauricio Pochettino’s players to bounce back: “They are unbeaten [in the Premier League] which is a huge confidence booster, so they should go into the game with confidence despite what happened in Europe.”

Although, with the Blues is such great form, Shearer still sees the Stamford Bridge outfit as front runners: “Chelsea will expect to win the game they’re playing well, going forward they are scoring goals – I think it will be a great game to watch but I would go for Chelsea.”
