Alan Shearer shares his thoughts on Chelsea v Everton

Coral sat down with ambassador Alan Shearer to exclusively discuss Everton’s tough trip to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea.

You can listen to Shearer’s Everton v Chelsea thoughts in the video below, but we’ve also picked out the best quotes from this latest interview…

“He’s got them playing very well”

Only a few weeks ago Antonio Conte was facing questions over his future. When asked about how the Italian tactician has turned it around Shearer said: “He’s got them playing very well, he’s got them playing a system they seem to enjoy, with three at the back.

“Hazard has the freedom of the park, [Diego] Costa is playing well and scoring goals, so they are a team in form as are Everton.”

Shearer, the Premier League’s all-time leading scorer was also full of praise for Conte’s favoured system: “He is playing in his favoured formation. It is a formation he’s used to, that he has played certainly before, and I think it was only a matter of time before he started playing that formation.

“It suits everyone in that team, they are playing much better football, they look more solid at the back and of course they are scoring goals.”

After failing to reach the Champions League places last season after a disastrous campaign, Shearer shared his thoughts on how this could be a good thing in the long run.

Shearer stated: “It has to benefit them at some point down the line. It might not now, but certainly after Christmas when the games mount up, when the FA Cup starts and of course into the next round of the Champions League.

“Without doubt Liverpool [and Chelsea] will be sat at home, on the settee, rather than travelling half way across the world to play the Champions League, so without doubt it will be huge benefit to them.”

Koeman “is a very good manager, very experienced, knows the game inside out”

Ronald Koeman faced a tough task when he arrived at Goodison Park and Shearer has praised the Dutchman: “Koeman has them playing, they all seem as though they are enjoying themselves, [Romelu] Lukaku is scoring goals, Ashley Williams I think has been a very, very good signing, so it should be a good game with goals.

“He [Koeman] is a very good manager, very experienced, knows the game inside out. He got his move to Everton and brought in a couple of players, notably Williams who I thought was a very good buy, very astute player, clever, experienced – which is exactly what Everton need.

“[Yannick] Bolasie has added something different to the side, very unpredictable and Lukaku has continued to score goals – after the speculation about him in the summer he’s knuckled down,” added Shearer.

“They are the team that has impressed me, I obviously knew Koeman, but he’s gone in and turned it around really quickly and they are looking good.”

On the outcome of the weekend clash Shearer commented: “I think it will be a very open and exciting game, I do expect goals from both teams, it’s a very, very tough game for Everton to go there.”

“If they can come away with anything from that game they will be delighted, but I think Chelsea will take all points.”
