Alan Shearer on English sides in the Champions League

In the latest of a series of exclusive sit-down video blogs, Coral football ambassador Alan Shearer talks to our very own Nicola McGeady about how the four English sides got on in the Champions League this past midweek.

Shearer discusses all of Arsenal, Tottenham, Leicester City and Manchester City in turn. Have a listen below for his thoughts:

Arsenal

The Gunners drew 1-1 away at the Parc des Princes to French champions PSG with Alexis Sanchez cancelling out Edinson Cavani’s first-minute opener.

“Arsenal were very fortunate to come away with a point at PSG,” said Shearer. “If it wasn’t for Cavani’s poor finishing, then it should have been a disappointing night for them.

“It was a very good result and that’s the one thing they can take out of the game, but they have to improve.”

Tottenham

Tottenham were somewhat surprisingly taken down 2-1 by Ligue 1 leaders Monaco, as they played their Champions League opener on the hallowed turf of Wembley under Mauricio Pochettino.

“I was at Wembley to watch Spurs against Monaco and Spurs were very poor,” Shearer added. “I thought they were slow and sluggish.

“They had one or two chances and didn’t take them, but looked very poor defensively.”

Leicester

Claudio Ranieri’s Foxes ran out comfortable 3-0 winners over Club Brugge in Belgium and that made for a memorable start to their maiden Champions League campaign.

Riyad Mahrez's brace in Brugge helped Leicester City to win their first-ever Champions League game, and Coral football ambassador Alan Shearer feels that is the big story from this week's English sides in Europe.

Riyad Mahrez, the reigning PFA Player of the Year, helped himself to two goals in Brugge with fellow winger Marc Albrighton also on the scoresheet.

“What a story,” exclaimed Shearer. “To go away in the Champions League after what they did last year and get the result was just amazing.”

Man City

Premier League leaders Manchester City extended their 100 per cent record in all competitions to seven successive wins thanks to a belated 4-0 Champions League romp at home to Borussia Monchengladbach. Sergio Aguero hit another hat-trick here.

“No surprise with Manchester City, Pep Guardiola and Aguero,” Shearer added. “There’s just goals, goals, goals with him.

“I know he missed a couple of penalties earlier on in the campaign, but he’s a top player and they’ll be looking to win that tournament.”
