Shearer says: “The two defeats were a wake-up call, but Newcastle seem to have settled into life in the Championship”

We sat Coral football ambassador Alan Shearer down with our own Nicola McGeady to discuss a topic very close to his heart; Newcastle United!

Despite early defeats, the Magpies have hit their stride under Rafael Benitez, and the Toon Army already look on the march when it comes earning immediate Premier League promotion from the Championship following the bitter taste of relegation last term.

“I think they will go up”

Newcastle’s latest assignment is a Saturday 3pm home game with Wolverhampton Wanderers at St James’ Park. Here’s what Shearer had to say about his hometown team and former club:

“I think they will go up,” Shearer said of the Magpies. “It was a very difficult start for them playing Fulham and Huddersfield.

“The two defeats were a wake-up call, but they seem to have settle into life in the Championship.”

“Rafa has got them playing some great stuff”

Shearer has also been impressed by the turnaround in fortunes experienced on Tyneside under Benitez.

Newcastle United have really rediscovered their form under ex-Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid manager Rafael Benitez, and Magpies legend Alan Shearer firmly believes they will get back into the Premier League straight away.

Newcastle United have really rediscovered their form under ex-Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid manager Rafael Benitez, and Magpies legend Alan Shearer firmly believes they will get back into the Premier League straight away.

“Rafa has got them playing some great stuff and very, very well organised,” Shearer added. “They’re not conceding goals [anymore] and everything is going to plan for them at this moment in time.

“All their drills on the training ground seem to be working on the pitch, which is the most important thing, and life is good at Newcastle. Long may that continue.”

Shearer is also very confident the Magpies will pick up three home points against Wolves, who were hammered 4-0 at home by League One play-off winners Barnsley in midweek.
