Alan Shearer on Alan Pardew and managerial pressure
Coral ambassador Alan Shearer sat down with our very own Nicola McGeady to exclusively share his thoughts on Alan Pardew and managerial pressure in general.
There has been much speculation surrounding Pardew’s future at Crystal Palace, who have the worst record out of England’s top four leagues for points-per-game in 2016, and many suggest a loss to Swansea City on Saturday will seal his fate.
You can listen to Shearer’s thoughts on the matter in the video below, but we’ve also picked out the best quotes from this latest interview…
“They’re conceding far too many goals”
“That’s what happens when you don’t win football matches, that’s what happens when you’re down at the bottom of the league and that’s what happens when you have the worst points-per-game ratio of any team in England in 2016,” Shearer said.
“[When] under pressure to go and get a result, they have to get a result, they’re conceding far too many goals.
“It’s 17 games now in the league without a clean sheet, and that tells you where their problem lies. When you look at the goals that they conceded last weekend… particularly the tap-in for [Yaya] Toure from three or four yards out, that tells you why they’re having problems.”
“Managers are not going to get time unfortunately”
Pardew is not the only manager under pressure right now, though, with the likes of Jose Mourinho also not living up to their promise.
On the topic of whether clubs are too quick to sack managers these days, Shearer added: “As much as everyone wants time, and would like managers to get time, managers are not going to get time unfortunately.
“You have to deliver success for whatever club you’re at, Mourinho has to do it at Manchester United with the money that they’ve spent, and Alan Pardew has to do it at Crystal Palace.
“Unfortunately that’s the law of being a manager, you have to deliver success immediately – not in three or four years time. No one really get enough time,” Shearer ended.
