Shearer says: “There’s no place quite like Augusta.”

Premier League legend also discusses Grand National

I was out in Georgia for the golf last week and I’ve no doubt that the Masters is one of the best sporting events around.

There is no place quite like Augusta and it was another great tournament with an incredible final day, particularly the back nine.

It was strange to stand on the first tee and see a European get more support than a home boy but that’s what happened when Patrick Reed and Rory McIlroy teed off on Sunday.

The cheer for Reed was muted but when Rory hit his first shot the place was absolutely roaring.

In a way I think that helped Patrick Reed and it seemed to make him tick.

He held his nerve throughout, especially on the 18th, and that says a lot about his character.

Everywhere you looked on the final day there were players making birdies, particularly the likes of Paul Casey, Rickie Fowler and Jordan Speith and it really made for a special event.

It looked set up for McIlroy on the final day but it just never quite happened for him.

If he had sunk his eagle putt on the 2nd the momentum would have really been there but it wasn’t to be once again at Augusta for him unfortunately.

The Grand National

Just like every other household we always used to have the Grand National on growing up and it’s a race I love.

This year I’m going to be backing Baie Des Iles, the grey horse with Katie Walsh on board.

It would be a great story and whilst it’s always been difficult to follow with playing and now working on a Saturday, I’ll certainly be keeping an eye on it this weekend.
