Alan Shearer on Tottenham’s “embarrassing” Champions League exit

Shearer has his say on Spurs’ Champions League exit

Coral ambassador and leading pundit Alan Shearer provides his thoughts on Tottenham’s Champions League exit, after the London club failed to progress from the group stage.

Spurs were sunk 2-1 on the night by Monaco, in a match that was a must-win if Mauricio Pochettino’s men were to stand a chance of progressing after earlier defeats to the Ligue 1 side and Bayer Leverkusen.

So, in this latest edition of Shearer Says, the former England captain assesses Tottenham’s failed Champions League journey.

See exactly what Shearer has to say on Spurs in the exclusive video interview below, while we’ve summed up some of the highlights too…

“They should be raging”

When asked whether fans should be raging about Tottenham’s limp CL exit, Shearer said: “Rightly so they should be raging, because they worked their socks off to get into the Champions League with their performances last season.”

Spurs coach Pochettino caused controversy by not playing his best XI on the trip to face Group E leaders and eventual winners Monaco.

“And then to go into it, knowing that you’ve got to get a result at Monaco and leave two of your best defenders on the bench, not play your full strength team – I don’t understand it,”
added the all-time Premier League top scorer.

Spurs had left two of their star defenders Jan Vertonghen and Kyle Walker on the bench, seemingly to be rested, and replacements Kevin Wimmer and Kieran Trippier disappointed.

“They got what they deserved”

Tottenham conceded twice in five minutes, which sent them tumbling out of the CL.

“So they got what they deserved to be honest, they didn’t play well,” continued Shearer.

“In fact they’ve been awful in all their Champions League games and to use Wembley as an excuse is not acceptable.”

“To go to Monaco and put in the performance that they did was pretty poor and embarrassing,” finished Coral’s ambassador.
