Shearer says: “It wouldn’t surprise me if Sunderland are battling relegation all season”
The last game of the Premier League weekend is Tottenham v Sunderland, so Coral’s Nicola McGeady sat down with football ambassador to discuss the game.
What did Shearer have to say? Just press play below to find out, or read the discreet summary that follows:
Moyes blameless for Sunderland stife
“First and foremost, I don’t think you can put any blame at all onto David Moyes,” Shearer said of the Black Cats boss. “He went into a very difficult situation with Sam Allardyce leaving for England.
“They’ve been flirting with relegation for a number of years, as did Newcastle and Aston Villa and the worst happened to those two clubs.
“It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Sunderland are going to be all season in a relegation battle.”
“Spurs rely too heavily on Harry Kane”
Shearer was at Wembley in midweek to witness Tottenham’s Champions League defeat to Monaco, and he wasn’t too impressed with what he saw on the hallowed turf of the home of English football.
“They were very disappointing and sluggish,” continued Shearer of Spurs.” I think it will be a big ask again for Tottenham to do what they did last season.
“They rely so heavily on Harry Kane and [Vincent] Janssen hasn’t hit top form as yet. If Harry’s not firing, I just wonder where the goals are going to come from for Tottenham.”
Top six where Tottenham will finish
“I would expect them to have enough to take three points against Sunderland,” Shearer added of Spurs, and went on to outline where he thinks Mauricio Pochettino’s men will end up this term.
“I can see them finishing fifth or sixth. They’ll have to improve drastically [on current form] and I don’t see that in them.”
