Alan Shearer on Steven Gerrard retirement and future of England

Shearer on Gerrard retirement and future of England

Coral football ambassador Alan Shearer sat down to discuss recent events from the footballing world, relating to former Liverpool hero Steven Gerrard and the England national side.

Shearer talks about Gerrard’s recent retirement, having called time on a stellar career, and how England are set to do under the guidance of recently appointed permanent boss Gareth Southgate.

Watch the exclusive videos in full below, and read the best quotes we’ve picked out as Alan answers some burning questions.

“I think more importantly he has experience of playing for England”

Speaking to Coral on Southgate’s official appointment as England boss, Alan believes it is the right choice and that he has brought an improvement to the side.

“There was improvement, which was vitally important, there had to be improvement,” stated Shearer.

“There wasn’t a huge list of candidates jumping out for the role to be England manager, so it was a good decision to give him it.”

The Premier League’s all-time scorer also said England must use to knowledge of both Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard for future tournaments.

“I think more importantly he has experience of playing for England, having played in major tournaments, which is a big, big advantage,” he continued.

“And what I’d like to see now is that we have to get the experience of former players in tournaments because now it’s crunch time. Because we have two great players in Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, I think it’s vitally important we click into their experience.”

“What we can expect is improvement”

Regarding the future of England, Alan doesn’t think they can go on to win the World Cup, though believes there has been plenty of improvement.

“I don’t think we can go from how we were in the summer, which was pretty awful, to in two years time going and winning the World Cup,” declared Shearer.

“I don’t think that’s possible, but what we can expect is improvement and there has already been some under Gareth.”

“He has been a giant of a player”

Moving onto the recent retirement news of Liverpool legend Gerrard and Alan was full of praise for the Merseysider, who recently ended his time with LA Galaxy to hang up his boots.

“He has been a giant of a player. He was a leader of men. He was a winner and he drove his team forward whenever it needed to be pushed,” stated Shearer. “He scored some spectacular goals and will, rightfully, be remembered for that European Cup win.”

“I think it’s vitally important we don’t lose their experience”

As previously mentioned, Shearer thinks England would benefit hugely from handing roles to both Gerrard and Lampard.

“Whether it’s working with the Under-21s, the Under-18s or the full squad, I think it’s vitally important we don’t lose their experience,” he added.

“We have to have them involved in some way so that in four or eight years time we are not in the same position.”
