Alan Shearer on Wayne Rooney’s Man Utd goal record

Alan Shearer blog: “He 100 per cent absolutely deserves it, he has been a top, top player”

Coral ambassador Alan Shearer took the time to sit down with us and give his thoughts on Wayne Rooney’s Manchester United scorer record, as the Red Devils skipper eyes surpassing current joint all-time Man Utd top scorer Sir Bobby Charlton.

As comfortably the Premier League’s leading scorer on 260 strikes, former Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United striker Shearer was the perfect pundit to ask about Rooney’s haul. So what did he have to say?

Punters can view Coral’s exclusive interview in the video below, while we have also summed up Shearer’s main points and most intriguing soundbites for your reading pleasure…

“Forget money, he would play for £50 a week”

When asked about Rooney’s scoring record, Shearer stated: “To be England’s best goalscorer is one hell of an achievement, to be Manchester United’s best scorer, which he will be, I know he has equalled it with Sir Bobby, is an incredible thing for him and for his family.”

“He’s a top player, of course not as good as he was,” added the ex-England captain.

“Wayne is the type of guy who, forget money, he would play for £50 a week, that is the type of guy he is.

“He 100 per cent absolutely deserves it, he has been a top, top player.”

“Everyone wants to knock you off that perch”

As Alan knows all about scoring records, the Coral ambassador also addressed how difficult it can be to stay motivated.

“It’s one thing getting to the top, it is another thing staying there”, he stated.

What are Shearer's thoughts on Rooney?

What are Shearer’s thoughts on Rooney?

“Because once you’re there everyone wants to knock you off that perch. And, to have the hunger, desire, the attitude to train every day and to perform every single weekend, it takes some doing and he’s [Rooney] been superb.”

And, what does Shearer make of Rooney’s Premier League future?

“I think he’s got an appetite to play in the Premier League, he’s not gonna play every week, he seems to have accepted that and understands that.

“I was different…I wanted to get off at the top. Wayne’s slightly different…and of course he’ll go on and smash Sir Bobby’s record, which is one hell of an achievement,” finished Shearer.
