Stabletalk: “I feel the track and distance will really suit him.”

Dan Skelton talks us through his Thursday runners and getting his brother Harry to 100 season winners

It was great to clock up our 100th winner of the season at Wincanton on Wednesday, and the team are in great form going in to Aintree. There will be no let up though as we try to get Harry over the line too; he has another 12 to go and we’ll do our best! We’ve always been a really competitive pair, and not long ago we took a day out to film a race with a difference for a bit of fun:

It was great to have a day away from the yard, which we all need from time to time, but for now we’ll be concentrating on a great week of racing at Aintree as well as having a few runners elsewhere.

2.20 Aintree – Bedrock

Bedrock is still a maiden and we’d have to expect him to still be a maiden by 1st May given the strength of this race. That said, it’s a nice opportunity for him to get some more experience under his belt. He was running well in the Adonis at Kempton when he just hit the top of the second hurdle and got a little bit of a fright from that, although he did run on nicely. He has jumped well at home since then and is fit for this. Obviously he is a big price to win the race but we just want to see him come here and run well and we can then build on that next season.

4.40 Aintree – Yorkist

I am really looking forward to running Yorkist in the Red Rum Handicap Chase as I feel the track and distance will really suit him. We just need a bit of luck to go our way on the day and we will be there with every chance. The owners Mike and Eileen Newbould have not had the best of seasons so hopefully this horse can give them something to cheer about.

5.35 Taunton – Captain Simon

I am going to have a close look at the ground for Captain Simon before he runs at Taunton as it is drying out all the time. He is a nice horse and he won his only English point-to-point back in February. We bought him off Francesca Nimmo and Charlie Poste who do a fantastic job with their pointers. I wouldn’t especially say he is a bumper horse but this does not look to be a great race. He is very fit, honest and will love a bit of decent ground but I just wouldn’t be taking any chances on extraordinarily fast ground.
