About Jim:

Jim Crowley began his flat racing career as an amateur before switching to National Hunt racing, where he landed approximately 300 winners. He then returned to the flat to ride for sister-in-law Amanda Perrett. After years of hard work, Jim was finally rewarded when we won the 2016 Stobart Flat Jockey Championship with an incredible 148 winners. That was followed by a lucrative retained partnership with leading owner Sheikh Hamdan al-Maktoum, for whom he is the no.1 jockey. Now, the reigning Champion Jockey gives you an exclusive insight into all of his big rides for the 2017 season, courtesy of Coral.

Crowley Calls It: “I think he will have a really good chance in this race”

Coral Racing Ambassador Jim Crowley talks us through his rides on day two of Chester May Meeting

Thursday – Chester

1.50 Khairaat

It’s his first run of the year and he must have a good chance. I am riding at my lightest weight 8 stone 7 pounds. He’s the favourite for the race and has a good draw in one. Hopefully he’ll do the business. I’m really looking forward to riding him. I can’t do any lower than that and I’ll be living on fresh air for the next couple of days. I’ve known for around three days that I was likely to have to get down to the weight. I would have preferred longer but it’s enough time, and I’ll be doing lots of running and keeping off the carbs. I’ll then have a sweat on the day.

3.00 Mutawatheb

He was a bit unlucky at Chelmsford last time out. He went for a run up the inside and just got chopped off. He’s well drawn in stall five. It’s a competitive race but I expect him to be in the thick of things at the end of the race.

3.35 Tamleek

I ride Tamleek in the Chester Vase. We are going to find out where we are with him. He’s entered in the Derby and so we want to see if he can go round Chester and handle the bends. He’s a great big horse. He won at Newmarket last time and hung left that day. Hopefully he will run well. It’s a bit of fact finding mission that will tell us which way to go with him.

4.05 Dahik

He has a great draw in three. He was very professional on his debut and was just edged out of it late on by one of Clive Cox’s that they think quite a bit of. I think he will have a really good chance in this race.

4.35 Evergate

I really like Evergate but being drawn thirteen at Chester over six furlongs is going to make things very difficult for him. I think he may be better on a straight track too but this is definitely a horse that you want to keep on the right side of this season.

Robert Cowell is a great guy. I won the King’s Stand Stakes for him on Prohibit and he’s always been a big supporter of mine. He always puts me up when he can, and I really enjoy riding for him. I’ve been giving him a bit of stick lately, as he’s lost so much weight. I keep telling him he now looks like George Clooney. He literally looks like a new man.
