About Joe:

Former Jump jockey Joe Tizzard enjoyed a stellar career in the saddle, with his record 91 wins to claim the 1998-99 champion conditional title gaining him prominence. Tizzard’s first Cheltenham Festival successes came during that period, including an Arkle win onboard the Paul Nicholls trained Flagship Uberalles. However, it was his Grade 1 victories in partnership with Cue Card, trained by dad Colin, which really catapulted Joe into the big time. Now assistant trainer to his father the Tizzards’ Dorset yard is home to some of the most exciting horses in training, including Cue Card, Thistlecrack and Native River. Joe Tizzard: “I’m expecting a massive run from Russian Hawk”

We get the latest from the Tizzard stables

Saturday Runner

1.50 Sandown – Russian Hawk

Russian Hawk is in good form. I think he’s off a very workable mark. He went up a 1lb for just being beaten at Ascot last time. He’s a progressive horse and we were talking about Cheltenham for him. I think he’s got a live chance. He will handle the conditions well and two and a half miles around Sandown will suit him. I’m expecting a massive run from Russian Hawk

Sunday Runners

3.55 Warwick – Cucklington

Cucklington is what he is. He ran well a couple of starts ago. The handicapper has given him half a chance. Three mile five furlongs will suit and Harry Cobden gets a really good tune out of him. He is perhaps better bullying a 0-110 field than carrying less weight in a 0-125.

5.00 Warwick – Sizing Cusimano

Sizing Cusimano won nicely at the start of the season and then we bottomed him a bit so we’ve given him time to freshen up. I think he’s quite a nice horse who can be competitive in this handicap. However he is a novice chaser for next season really. We are looking forward to running him in the spring but definitely looking forward to next year.

Colin Tizzard Cheltenham Running Plans

The horses are in really good form. We are really pleased with them and we’ve done everything with them now so we are literally going to bounce them in. The Tuesday and Wednesday runners will have tomorrow off and then they’ll be on the gallops on Sunday.

As always the pressure has cranked up in recent days and we are all feeling it. It’s the same every year. We are competitive people and we put the pressure on ourselves as we want to do well. We’ve won a Gold Cup and we want to win it again now.

We definitely want the rain. Lostintranlastion would perform well on genuinely good ground but he handles the soft ground, and soft ground would put more pressure on Defi Du Seuil’s stamina. So in truth we are really looking forward to the forecast rain. So many times we’ve got to February and it’s been heavy ground all winter and by Cheltenham they are watering the ground.

But it’s completely different this year. I don’t think it will be as soft as last year but given the forecast it will be genuine slow ground. It’s good news for the horses and we are happy it’s coming.

Tuesday Runners:

Supreme Novices Hurdle Elixir Du Nutz and Beaufort West will both run

Arkle Trophy – Slate House runs

Ultima Handicap Chase Royal Vacation will run and we may well run Sizing Codelco. The latter is in the Midlands Grand National but I think we’ll run him here.

Champion Hurdle We are leaning towards running Vision Des Flos in the Coral Cup unless this field really cut up

Close Brothers Handicap Chase The Russian Doyen will run in this race. Molineaux will get balloted out

Wednesday:

RSA Chase Mister Malarkey will run and so will Drinks Interval

Coral Cup Highest Sun will definitely run in this and I think Vision Des Flos will too. Storm Home will be balloted out.

Cross Country Ultragold is a definite and had a really good school round the course in the week

Champion Bumper Master Debonair will run

Thursday:

JLT Lostintranlation is in great form for this

Pertemps Padleyourowncanoe will run in this. Shoal Bay won’t get in.

Stayers Hurdle –Kilbricken Storm and West Approach both run here

Friday:

County Hurdle Cyrus Darius won’t run but Pingshou has the choice between this or the Martin Pipe race later on Friday

Albert Bartlett Both Rockpoint and Darlac will run in this race

Gold Cup Native River, Thistlecrack and Elegant Escape are all running here

Martin Pipe Pingshou could run here or in the County Hurdle earlier.
