AW Champion Jockey Luke Morris gives us his thoughts on today’s rides at Goodwood

ULYSSES was one of the buzz horses before the Investec Derby earlier this year and I think the Gordon Stakes (2.35) is a really good opportunity for him to get back on track.

They’ve given him plenty of time off since the Derby and trainer Sir Michael Stoute is a master at bringing this type of horse along steadily. He’ll take the beating.

The Sussex Stakes (3.10) is going to be one of the races of the week and the quicker ground in the Sussex Stakes is going to suit The Gurkha better than the softer conditions at Royal Ascot.

He was initially the one I was thinking of siding with in this race, however I’m wondering if the Coral-Eclipse might have left its mark on him a little compared to Galileo Gold who’s gone straight for the race and been aimed at it. I’ll just side with Galileo Gold, who is also tactically versatile.

I think it’s best to focus on the horses with form in the Molecomb Stakes (3.45) and The Last Lion is the solid option in the race. He’s been running well and generally runs his race. Slower ground might have helped him a bit more.

I’m hoping to get on the scoreboard today and think I have a good chance of doing so in the first race.

2.00 Glorious Goodwood – Moscato

He’s a real solid horse. Every time he’s come to the races this season he’s run his race and has been fourth in both the Ascot Stakes and the Northumberland Plate. He’s on a mark where he does need things to drop right for him, but this is probably the weakest test he’s had for a little while and the trip will be no problem for him. I think he’s got a really good chance in this.

4.55 Glorious Goodwood – Rioca

She’s taken a bit of time to come to hand in the spring and is just coming right. She had a good time of things at two and has strengthened up since she last run. I do think she’ll benefit from the run and she’s one to keep an eye on more for future races and a bit of cut in the ground.

Cheers,

Luke
