Jamie Spencer gives his thoughts on his Newbury rides this afternoon
I ride Among Angels for Richard Hannon in the first at Newbury (1.30pm). He’s the stable third string and has a nice pedigree so it will be a watching brief. Apparently of the three Frankie Dettori’s mount Aledaid is supposed to be an aeroplane so keep an eye on him.
I’m really looking forward to riding Inchila in the Oaks trial (2.00pm). She’s always been a good work horse and I think she’s got a good chance in this race as it doesn’t look the strongest of listed races. I’ll be disappointed if she isn’t there or thereabouts.
In the 3.05pm I ride Shirazz for Seamus Durack. She will have a squeak but it’s a very open looking handicap and I thought the top horse, Kastini, would be hard enough to beat.
Raven Ridge who I ride in the 4.10pm is a nice horse. He ran in a hot handicap at the Craven meeting and ran well. The ground being good will suit him as it was a bit quick at Newmarket. I think he’ll be a lot better on the ground as it is at Newbury today. Personal Opinion beat Galizzi, another one of Michael Bell’s, last time and I think Raven Ridge might be a bit better than Galizzi so on a line through that I think we have a good chance. The bottom horse of Hughie’s, Arab Dawn, would be the main danger. It was a moderate race that he won last time but he has a good staying pedigree so he could improve a lot. Overall I think Raven Ridge is a strong ride.
We tried Wind Fire over seven furlongs in the Nell Gwyn last time and she plainly didn’t stay. This 6 furlongs is as far as she wants to go. She’s taking on the colts and I thought Roger Varian’s horse, Mushir, would be very hard to beat. They’ve always thought a lot of him. He ran well in the Free Handicap and probably just didn’t stay. Wind Fire’s a nice filly but, number one, she has a penalty and, number two, she is taking on the colts so for those reasons it won’t be easy but she deserves her chance.
