5 stars of the Premier League season so far
Coral run the rule over early performers
The Premier League season may only be three games in but it’s already produced some great games, spectacular goals and yet another Arsenal crisis. Even at this early stage, there have been some clear stand-out performers who’ve made an especially good start.
The Coral News team have been watching the action closely and picked five of the very best performers.
Paul Pogba had a solid but unspectacular first year back at Manchester United. He’s showing how good he really is this season though. Nemanja Matic’s arrival has liberated him in midfield, giving him the licence to show off his attacking qualities.
United have won all three of their games so far and Pogba has been right at the heart of their convincing start with an impressive return of two goals and one assist in three appearances.
Manchester United are the only side with three wins out of three and Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s displays are another key factor. Like Pogba, he only showed glimpses of his quality last season but the attacking midfielder is now fully settled at Old Trafford.
Mkhitaryan’s ability to beat defenders and play incisive passes have helped United to look very slick going forward. He has five assists already this term – three more than any other player in the league.
Huddersfield Town were tipped for the drop by many but they’re currently sitting all the way up in third place. The Terriers are one of two sides yet to concede a goal, along with Manchester United, and on-loan goalkeeper Jonas Lossl deserves huge credit for his contribution.
Lossl was superb against Crystal Palace on the opening day and has continued to impress since. He’s made 10 saves in total this season.
There’s been plenty of speculation about Philippe Coutinho’s future this summer. But no one was thinking of Coutinho as Sadio Mane tore through Arsenal on Sunday.
The Senegal international’s speed, skill and eye for goal make him one of the biggest threats in the league. He’s already scored three goals so far. Expect plenty more to follow.
Alvaro Morata has wasted little time in showing his class at Chelsea. The Spain international already has two goals and two assists, despite only starting two games.
Morata may not have the aggression of Diego Costa, but there are very few weaknesses to his game. He’s good in the air and on the ground, can bring others into play and possesses superb movement. Whether the Blues would have preferred Romelu Lukaku or not, the early indications from the striker they did capture have been very positive.
