Best Joey Barton quotes
There’s never a dull moment when Joey Barton is involved, proven by his recent antics at current club Rangers.
The former Newcastle United, Manchester City and Burnley midfielder has managed to carve out a prolonged career on the pitch, but thanks to his outspoken nature he has also grabbed the headlines throughout his 16 years as a professional.
Barton most recently caused a stir at Gers, being suspended for a training ground incident, while quotes from his new book have also raised plenty of eyebrows, with a host entertaining quotes adding to his already ridiculous list of memorable sayings.
The now 34-year-old claims he “had more about him than Owen Hargreaves”, a player who won two Champions League crowns with two different clubs, and stated he should have earned his England caps instead. Barton’s current club Rangers are 12/1 with Coral to win the Scottish top-flight title this season.
Following the latest in a long list, Coral outline the best Joey Barton quotes, as the Gers midfielder continues to entertain and annoy many still involved in the sport with his words…
Anger over real name
“How I wish the mass media had christened me Joe instead of Joey. I hate Joey, not going to lie. Nobody I respect calls me it.”
Despite his real first name being Joey, his Twitter handle also starting with @Joey and having been called this his whole life, Barton was bizarrely furious over the media supposedly dubbing referring to him as exactly that.
Not a fan of ‘Brand Beckham’
“Not arsed if they’re Beckham’s or not. 9.99 pounds for a pair of gruds for H&M is an outrage, do one Becks. They cost about 1p to make in a sweat shop in the Third World, is there no limit to what ‘Brand Beckham’ will endorse for a pound note?”
After seeing a advert for David Beckham’s latest underwear range during the Super Bowl, Barton was quick to slam the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star, which was maybe a bit over the top when talking about pants!
Doesn’t rate Barcelona’s Neymar
“Neymar is like the Justin Bieber of football. Brilliant on the old YouTube. Cat piss in reality…”
If people like to see Barton be proved wrong, then this quote regarding Barcelona and Brazil superstar Neymar is right up your alley. The Gers player previously claimed Neymar simply looked good in highlights but failed to live up to expectations in reality.
With the Brazilian having forged arguably the most deadly partnership in European football with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez at the Nou Camp, winning the Champions League in 2014, it’s fair to say Barton was a little off with this one.
Alonso stealing his Liverpool move
“Xabi [Alonso] and I had history. He blamed me for knocking him out in what he thought was a deliberate clash of heads in one of our earliest contests, and I blamed him for stealing my move to Liverpool.”
Yes, Barton blamed Spanish midfield maestro Alonso for stealing his supposed switch to Liverpool. The former Marseille midfielder was involved in a heated clash with the Spaniard when coming up against the Reds and was eventually sent off for a rash challenge on his opponent.
Better than the rest
“Honestly, I think I’m the best [English midfielder]. Luka Modric and Samir Nasri are very good, but in terms of English players, well, Jack Wilshere isn’t bad, but Frank Lampard’s on the way down and Steven Gerrard’s been injured a lot.”
Barton has always held himself in high regard, and his 2011 attack on English players including Gareth Barry and Gerrard was rounded off by boldly listing stars he was better than.
This included serial Premier League title winner Lampard, current Real Madrid playmaker Modric and Liverpool legend Gerrard. He always was modest.
Celtic over Rangers
“I’m a Celtic fan.”
One of Barton’s shortest and simple quotes, but one that has produced plenty of repercussions online.
Having previously admitted he was a Celtic fan, even posting a picture of his son in a Hoops shirt and stating ‘Hail, Hail’, Barton went on to join their bitter Old Firm rivals Rangers.
Pastore no match for Barton
“Javier Pastore wouldn’t get a beach ball off me if we were locked in a phone box. He’s turd. Anyone who thinks he isn’t is clueless.”
Despite current PSG and Argentina international midfielder Pastore having an abundance of honours in France and featured at both the 2010 World Cup and 2015 Copa America, Barton believed he was a better player overall.
Delving into ugly politics
“If I’m somewhere and there was four really ugly girls, I’m thinking she’s not the worst – that’s all UKIP are.”
Barton was invited onto Question Time in 2014 to speak about all the important political matters, and the controversial character raised tensions with his comments regarding UKIP.
The Merseysider was asked about the future prospects of the party and their rise, but his response was typically met with some backlash.
Calling teammates fat
“It’s alright, I’m not going to steal your breakfast you fat p***k.”
When involved in the England camp, Barton certainly didn’t hold back when talking about his then teammates, having lashed out at former Chelsea hero Lampard when the latter opted to switch tables to avoid sitting with him.
Barton for England manager?
“Let’s look at who is doing the key roles. Sam Allardyce is England manager. Well, am I a better player than Sam? Well, yeah, of course. Do I believe, if Sam can get to be England manager then I can? Of course I do. What’s Sam got that I haven’t got?”
Regarding the appointment of Sam Allardyce’s as England, Barton was quick to pipe up and claim that he could do a much better job in charge of the national side.
With all that has gone on in recent weeks, with Allardyce being dismissed after just 67 days in the job, maybe Barton could offer up his CV to the FA?
