Burnley have momentum edge over Leicester in Championship title clash

It’s the battle of the giants in the Championship with Burnley and Leicester going head-to-head at Turf Moor with the title still very much on the line. Leicester (1/9 with Coral) remain out in front, but it’s Burnley (5/1) who have the edge in momentum after closing the gap to just three points in midweek.

Both sides will be extremely happy at where they are right now, even relaxed. Automatic promotion is all but assured and their fans are quite understandably becoming more excited by the week at the prospect of Premier League football next season.

Neither team have been beaten in the Championship this year; Burnley have won ten and drawn five of their 15 games, while Leicester (who have a game in hand) have won ten and drawn four.

So this Saturday lunchtime showdown is as much about pride as anything else and I’m sure we are in for an entertaining encounter.

Much has been made of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge scoring 20 plus goals each for Liverpool this season, but Danny Ings and Sam Vokes have also joined the 20/20 club after the latter put away a penalty in midweek. Leicester, too, have a potent twin strike-force in David Nugent (17) and Jamie Vardy (16).

By their own very high standards, Leicester have slipped a little in the past week with draws away at Blackburn and, more surprisingly, at home to relegation-haunted Yeovil on Tuesday when they needed a last-gasp equaliser to rescue a point.

Burnley just keep marching on and are now going for their seventh win in eight games. They also boast the meanest defence in the Championship and have lost less games this season than any side throughout the four divisions.

A win by two goals or more would take them top, but I fancy it will be close with the home side edging it, maybe 2-1 (10/1) or even 3-2 (33/1).

Ipswich, coming with a late run for promotion (100/30 to finish top six, 12/1 to be promoted) did their cause no harm at all when beating high-flying Derby in midweek and will fancy their chances of following up against troubled Nottingham Forest. Coral’s 6/5 makes plenty of appeal.

There’s also a huge game right at the bottom of the Championship with Yeovil (6/5) and Barnsley (11/5) scrapping like crazy to avoid the drop (both 1/5 to be relegated).

Both teams are showing great spirit – Yeovil have drawn at Wigan this month as well as at Leicester, while Barnsley won 3-1 at Reading on Tuesday. This has the look of a draw (12/5) about it, a result which wouldn’t really do either club any good.
