Best value bet on Good Friday is backing Wigan, Burnley and Derby
Football League action takes centre stage this Good Friday, with Coral offering a massively boosted 11/2 treble for three of the Championship’s top six earning Easter wins.
Back Wigan Athletic, Burnley and Derby County together to take advantage of this superb price, because they are scant value at odds-on on their own. The Latics host Reading, while the Clarets are at Lancashire rivals Blackpool and the Rams tackle an away day in Doncaster.
Wigan v Reading
These sides are next to one another in the table, but the Latics have won each of their last three meetings with the Royals. Uwe Rosler’s Wigan are thus 5/6 favourites for a victory that would put clear daylight between themselves and Reading.
Both teams earned credible draws in 90 minutes against illustrious opposition (Arsenal and Leicester City respectively) in their last outings. Nigel Adkins was defeated in his last match on the road, while the Latics have lost just once at home under Rosler.
Wigan’s Spanish midfielder Jordi Gomez hit a hat-trick in the last meeting between these sides at the DW Stadium. Odds of 40/1 say he will repeat that feat, while he is 2/1 in the anytime scorer market.
Royals striker Pavel Pogrebnyak has mixed memories of this matchup. He netted what proved to be a consolation in the reverse fixture, and was sent off in the meeting before that. Manchester United loanee Nick Powell, meanwhile, got the Latics’ winner back in December. He is 5/4 to add to his dozen goals this term at anytime.
Blackpool v Burnley
As Sean Dyche’s Clarets close in on promotion, they can take comfort from the fact they did the double over the Tangerines when they last went up. Burnley have won five of the last seven meetings, so are 17/20 to come away from Bloomfield Road with three points.
Only Charlton Athletic and Yeovil Town have netted fewer home goals than Barry Ferguson’s Seasiders. A win to nil for visitors Burnley is more temptingly priced at 9/4.
The Clarets also boast a formidable away record, suffering just one defeat on the road in all competitions in 2014. League leaders Leicester are the only Championship club to have picked up more points on trips than the Clarets, with only Derby and the Foxes scoring more.
Danny Ings netted the opener in the reverse fixture – a 2-1 Burnley victory. He is a 3/1 shot to do the same here. Austria Under-20 cap Ashley Barnes, meanwhile, is something of a scoring specialist against Blackpool. He has four in his last five outings when paired with this opposition, so odds of 6/5 on him getting a goal anytime are well worth considering.
Doncaster v Derby
Steve McClaren’s Rams have netted the most away goals in the Championship, and have recorded three straight wins over Rovers. Derby are thus 10/11 for victory, but both teams have scored in five of the last six meetings, so odds of 27/10 on that happening and three points for the visitors are more attractive.
Paul Dickov’s Doncaster have lost both their last two home games, and are set to face two in-form County forwards. Johnny Russell has three in his last six and Patrick Bamford has as many goals in five. They are 7/4 and 5/4 respectively to score anytime.
Striker Chris Martin, meanwhile, has three in four, so is even-money to net here. Box-to-box midfielder Craig Bryson is your best bet to break forward and supplement the Rams attack. He scored in the reverse fixture, and is 2/1 on be on target again.
