Championship derby tips for August 20 and 21
We are now three weeks into the 2016/17 Championship campaign, and already clubs are beginning to break away from others to give us an idea how the season will pan out.
But that all changes on derby day when anything can happen, and a whopping five are on show this matchweek, so Coral have stuck their necks out and picked out top tips from each for punters to take…
Owls and Leeds to draw 1-1
Saturday, 12:30 BST
Remarkably, these two Yorkshire teams have drawn 1-1 in each of the last four seasons, including once at Sheffield Wednesday’s home ground Hillsborough.
As the duo have had shaky starts to the campaign, with the Owls losing last time out against Burton Albion and Leeds United still without a win, back them to battle out that same scoreline once again at a tasty 11/2 price.
Birmingham and Wolves to split spoils
Saturday, 15:00 BST
Birmingham City may have home advantage this weekend, but that hasn’t really mattered in recent meetings with West Midlands rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers, having won just one of their last five at St. Andrew’s.
Two of those were draws and, as both teams are level on points this season with five, back another share of the spoils at 9/4.
Total goals over 3.5 in Terriers v Tykes tussle
Saturday, 15:00 BST
Another Yorkshire derby features this weekend, this time between Huddersfield Town and Barnsley, who have both started the season well.
The Tykes are the joint-top scorers this term with seven from three matches so far. And, as they have battled out five clashes featuring four or more goals with the Terriers in the past four seasons they’ve met, take odds of 9/4 for the fixture to produce over 3.5 again.
Villans to overcome Rams
Saturday, 17:30 BST (live on Sky Sports 1)
It still seems strange to see Aston Villa in the second-tier, but here they are and they travel the short distance to the East Midlands where they meet Derby County.
The Villans started slowly under Roberto Di Matteo as they adjusted to new life in the Championship, but have looked better in their last two games. They last duelled with the Rams in the 2007/08 Premier League season, and beat them in their last three fixtures, so back them to win at 5/2.
Norwich to win Old Farm derby but both teams score
Sunday, 12:00 BST (live on Sky Sports 1)
It’s always a feisty occasion between East Anglia rivals Ipswich Town and Norwich City, whose derby is sometimes affectionately known as the Old Farm, though the Canaries have certainly got the better of the Tractor Boys in recent head-to-heads.
Norwich have won five of their last six matches against Ipswich, drawing the other, while the two sides have netted in four of them. Take tempting odds of 4/1 therefore for the Canaries to triumph and both teams score.
