Coral present five freak sporting injuries after McIlroy accident

After news that golfer Rory McIlroy will miss The Open after rupturing an ankle ligament playing football with his mates, which leaves Jordan Spieth as the 9/2 favourite, Coral look at five freak injuries that sports stars have had, mostly doing other things.

Santiago Canizares
Spain goalkeeper Santiago Canizares severed a tendon in his right foot after accidentally dropped a bottle of aftershave on his toe. The incident ruled him out of the 2002 World Cup, and happened just three days before the Spain squad were due to fly out to South Korea and Japan.

Greg Norman
McIlroy’s fellow golfer almost cost himself the chance to play the sport again, after a shock accident with a chainsaw in 2014 which very nearly left him without a left hand. While cutting trees at his south Florida home, he fell on the ladder and the chainsaw just missed his artery. Had it been running at full speed he would have had no chance.

Norman said at the time: “Thank God the blade wasn’t running full speed or it would have taken my hand off,” Norman said. “I handled everything as calmly as I could. There is no major damage. There is nerve damage, but no muscular damage. They fixed me up and here I am.”

Ronnie O’Sullivan
The snooker player turned up to the UK Championship to play in slippers, after breaking his ankle while out jogging, two weeks before. However, this didn’t deter him one bit and he ended up still winning!

Martin Castrogiovanni
The Italy rugby prop needed 14 stitches for the 2015 Six Nations after a domestic incident, when his friend’s dog bit him on the nose. One of the more bizarre injuries in sport, he was left out of the provisional squad to play Scotland.

Roy Carroll
Never far from controversy during his career, while at West Ham, the goalkeeper was collecting balls in the net when his foot got stuck which led to the Northern Irishman injuring his knee.
