David Moyes: Real Sociedad can challenge for Europe

David Moyes has worked wonders since taking over as Real Sociedad manager, so much so that with 21 points to play for, he believes they could qualify for Europe this term.

Now, before you all make cries of, “crazy!” or “deluded”, just remember that this is a coach who knows how to qualify for the Europa League, having done so with Everton.

Notable wins over Barcelona and Sevilla this season, give an indication, of just what they’re capable of on their day.

On their pursuit of Europe, Moyes said: “We are not mathematically safe from relegation, we have to make sure we win more games. But I’m confident we will.

“The players have a lot of belief just now and they’re tougher and I hope we can finish the season strong. I want us to finish as high up as we can because I want to build momentum for next season.”

Key players for Real Sociedad’s Europa League push
If the Basque side are yet to make a charge, they will need to have all of their players on top form. So, with this in mind, who immediately jumps out?

Carlos Vela will be crucial to Sociedad’s run-in and the Mexican has a great opportunity to add to his eight goals in 25 appearances across all competitions this term. With a tough trip to Barcelona in the penultimate game of the season, if he comes into this match on a scoring run, anything can happen.

Enjoy this great strike from him against Atletico Madrid earlier in the season!

Geronimo Ruli has no doubt played his way into a permanent contract this term. The 22-year-old Argentinian goalkeeper, who is on-loan from Uruguayan outfit Deportivo Maldonado has demonstrated that he has some talent and is certainly one for the future.

As is Moyes’ style, Sociedad have conceded few since the Scottish boss took over, and Ruli has been a big factor in this, as has our next pick.

Those of you not familiar with this defender, think Gerard Pique.

Are you there yet?

Inigo Martinez is a centre back blessed with talent, and he can be a top star in the future. He is a natural heir to Sergio Ramos in the heart of the national team defence, or the Real Madrid man could even shift to right back to accommodate him.

He ideally needs an accomplished, quality partner for next season, which should see Sociedad close games out better, without conceding late goals.

If these three players are on top of their game for the run-in, Europe is a real possibility.
