Alan Shearer looks ahead to England v Iceland

Coral football ambassador Alan Shearer emphasised the need to get a first-half goal to relieve fan frustration when speaking to our very own Simon Clare ahead of Roy Hodgson’s Three Lions facing Iceland in the final Euro 2016 last 16 tie on Monday, June 27th.

“We should win it, and I think we will win it,” Shearer said of the first knockout round game. “I know we’re on a difficult side of the draw now, but this game won’t be easy as everyone thinks it is.”

Praising Nordic Nation Iceland’s determination, spirit and unity, Shearer added: “I’ve watched Iceland a couple of times. They’re very determined. They’ve got a great team spirit and great togetherness.

“They will get men behind the ball and try and frustrate and try and hit us on the break, but we should have enough to break them down.”

After the 0-0 draw against Slovakia that concluded Euro 2016 Group B in disappointing fashion, as Wales pipped England to top spot in the pool, Shearer stressed how important getting on the scoresheet before half-time would be in Nice.

“It’s a matter of trying to get that first goal, and hopefully in the first-half, because the longer the games goes on the more frustrated people get,” Shearer continued.

England are odds-on favourites to win in 90 minutes, with Iceland sizeable outsiders to upset the Three Lions and advance to the quarter-finals.
