Spurs and Celtic play hosts to minnows in Europa League action
Despite this Champions League week being over, there is still more European football for punters to enjoy, with Premier League side Tottenham and Scottish champions Celtic both in Europa League action.
Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs are in need of form and host Greek outfit Asteras Tripolis, while Ronny Deila hopes to carry on the Hoops’ recent encouraging results as his side welcome Romanians Astra Giurgiu.
Surprisingly, neither of those teams in both fixtures have ever faced each other before in competitive football.
Tottenham v Asteras Tripolis
Greek Arcadian club Asteras may have only finished fifth last season in their domestic Superleague, but go into this game in superb form and also find themselves top of Group C, after beating Partizan Belgrade and drawing with Besiktas.
The Tripoli-based team are on a run of seven games in all competitions without defeat, winning five of them, and are massively tempting 17/2 chances to cause a shock in north London by beating Spurs too.
Joint-Europa League favourites Tottenham (14/1), on the other hand, go into this match odds-on at 2/7 for victory. However, they have only won two of their last nine games in all competitions.
Pochettino’s men have drawn both of their Europa League group stage fixtures this season, which is why odds of 9/2 for another share of the spoils are so tempting.
For goals, Spurs’ Christian Eriksen looks a good shout, having netted in his last two matches. The Dane is also 4/1 to score first.
Striker Jeronimo Barrales stands out amongst the many Argentine contingent on Asteras’ books, meanwhile, having netted three times this term. He is 7/2 in the anytime scorer market.
Celtic v Astra Giurgiu
Scottish Premiership side Celtic have also had an inconsistent start to the season, as they find themselves down in fifth in the domestic league and six points behind leaders Hamilton, who they recently lost 1-0 at home to.
They have, however, won four of their last five games in all competitions, and go into this encounter as odds-on 4/6 favourites. Chris Commons is 9/2 in the first scorer market.
Luckily for the Hoops, their upcoming Romanian opponents Astra (4/1 for victory) have lost three of their previous five matches and won none. The visitors have no points, meanwhile, from their opening two Europa League group D games, while Celtic are top with four.
Deila’s side are currently priced at 100/1 to win this competition this season, and a more realistic 9/4 to top Group D.
