Hatters hope for first home win after league return against Argyle

In 2006/07, Luton Town playing Plymouth Argyle was a Championship fixture. Some seven years on, it’s almost unthinkable to think these sides could fall just short of play-off places and the chance of Premier League football.

The Hatters, 5/4 favourites for victory here, made a top 10 second tier finish in 2005/06, while the Pirates ended up 11th the following season. Plymouth, a win off League Two’s play-off places going into the weekend, are 11/5 chances with Coral to get three points, while a draw is priced at 9/4.

Argyle boss John Sheridan, who is yet to mastermind victory on the road this term, will be happy to have Reuben Reid firing. The well-travelled 26-year-old striker began his career at Plymouth, and has five in as many matches in all competitions this term. Odds of 6/4 say Reid will score anytime in this encounter.

Swansea City youngster Alex Bray should also feature here after his Deadline Day loan move to the Pirates. It’s 5/1 that he caps his Argyle bow with a goal. Luton, meanwhile, are averaging just a point per match in the fourth tier after five games on their return to the Football League.

This is something which Town manager John Still is calm about. “I’m not really concerned about the mixed start,” he said. “I’m more concerned with the slight lacks of discipline in our game that have contributed to that.

“The greatest thing is everyone is working hard at it. The lack of goals isn’t disappointing, it’s more disappointing that we’ve conceded silly goals.”

Hatters midfielder Matt Robinson begins a three-match ban, but summer signing Andy Drury returns from a rib injury. The winger is 11/2 in the anyime market. Luke Rooney, Luton’s top scorer with two, will occupy the other flank, and is shorter at 7/2.

Punters can also back Paul Benson, whose 17 goals fired Town to promotion from the Conference, to net the opener at 11/2. Mark Cullen, once of Hull City, is an alternative attacking option for Hatters boss Still, and is 6/4 to score anytime.
