Manchester United and two other clubs that could sign Jan Oblak next summer

Atleti keeper ready to reject new deal?

Reports have emerged that Jan Oblak is in fact not going to renew his contract with his club Atletico Madrid throwing his future into doubt.

He has steadily grown in stature since his move from Benfica in 2014 and has a contract taking him up to the summer of 2021.

But after failing to win the Champions League with the club he may feel it’s time to move on.

There’s been a flurry of moves in the goalkeeping market over the last two seasons, with Oblak’s options now slightly more limited.

However, with this in mind The Coral News Team have drawn together a couple of options for the Slovenian number one.

RB Leipzig

This may come slightly out of left field for many, but there’s some logic to it.

Leipzig will be welcoming Hoffenheim boss Julian Nagelsmann as their new manager next summer.

The much sought after German manager was being lined up by Bayern Munich and had admirers in England, but his appointment by RB has shown just how serious they are.

If the club can find a way of returning to the Champions League for the 2019-20 season then this transfer could have even more clout to it.

Nagelsmann will have money to spend and will want to build a team to go toe-to-toe and ultimately usurp Bayern at the top of the Bundesliga.

Oblak could be the first and most vital piece of the puzzle.

Paris Saint-Germain

Paris Saint-Germain have proved over the last five years they’re not afraid to dip into their war chest of funds when they feel it’s necessary.

Signing both Neymar and Kylian Mbappe in the same summer in 2017 proved that.

In terms of the goalkeeping issue though, manager Thomas Tuchel has just brought in veteran Gianluigi Buffon between the sticks.

He will bring a steady pair of hands and a wealth of experience to a back-line that now features three of its centre backs between 21 and 24 years of age.

The 40-year-old Buffon has defied many odds over his career but PSG could well seek a quality replacement in 2019 and Oblak would be that kind of signing.

Manchester United

As previously mentioned, with England’s top six club all now having distinguished recognised number ones. A move to the Premier League looks off the cards.

But there’s one caveat that could see Oblak turn up at Old Trafford. Buffon’s lack of longevity could mean PSG turn their attentions to David De Gea instead.

The infamous fax machine story robbed the Spaniard of a move to Real Madrid a few years ago. But a move to Paris could be the place he can get his hands on the Champions League.

Whether Mourinho is in charge of The Red Devils next season or not, the club’s top brass would be desperate to get a world class replacement for their keeper.

Oblak claimed 21 clean sheets in 34 La Liga games last campaign compared to De Gea’s 15 shut-outs in 36 Premier League appearances.

There’s a few moving parts that will all have to fit into place but Oblak in a Man United shirt is not entirely inconceivable.
