Five potential Borussia Dortmund summer departures

Borussia Dortmund have endured an incredibly poor season in the Bundesliga, dropping dramatically towards a relegation spot under Jurgen Klopp, despite having finished second to Bayern Munich last term.

The Black and Yellows, 28/1 with Coral to win the Champions League, recently tied up the long-term future of German superstar Marco Reus, securing his signature on a new four-and-a-half-year contract.

However, despite their wonderful wideman committing himself to the club, Dortmund face a possible mass exodus next summer if fortunes and form don’t change this current campaign.

Coral writers look at five players who could potentially depart the Westfalenstadion in the summer.

Mats Hummels
The World Cup winning centre-back has long been tipped for a move to the Premier league, with Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United his most speculated destination.

Hummels’ hefty price tag and his recent determination in helping Dortmund reverse their horrific run have meant the dominant defender has remained at the club throughout the January transfer window.

However, a summer switch is a genuine possibility, with the German now reaching 26 years of age and hoping to feature in the Champions League next season, the club could find it hard to turn down a bid from a Premier League side.

If relegation fears are recognised, then their drop could spark a bidding war between many of England’s top-flight clubs.

Sven Bender
Strong defensive midfielder Bender has reportedly attracted interest from the likes of Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal and Spanish league champions Atletico Madrid.

The battling German could provide any top European side with a control and power from his holding midfield attributes, something the Gunners may look to address next summer in a bid to bolster central options for future seasons.

Neven Subotic
The Serbia international gave hope to potential suitors United and Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea, with the defender recently declaring that he would only ever leave for a foreign club, ruling out any switch to another German team.

However, Subotic’s stuttering displays in the heart of Dortmund’s defence this term may have put off some clubs but, within a secure set-up the strong Serbian could still take control of a brilliant back-line.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan
The Armenian attacker is another star that could depart Dortmund, if their relegation nightmare becomes reality at the end of this current campaign.

Menacing Mkhitaryan reportedly turned down the chance to join Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool in 2013, instead opting for move to Klopp’s German outfit, and he has since established himself as one of Europe’s most promising playmakers.

Dortmund paid a reported £21m to Shakhtar Donetsk for their attacking midfielder, but the star’s agent has recently stated his client’s desire to depart at the end of this season, alerting top-flight clubs such as Arsenal and Liverpool.

Ilkay Gundogan
The 24-year-old has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford, and further speculation has circulated since the Red Devils boss Van Gaal recently stated that he will seek to sign a midfield maestro next summer.

Gundogan would fit the bill perfectly in the red half of Manchester, with his direct play and power a feature of what United are currently lacking in central areas.

The German has just returned from a long lay-off through injury, but already helped his struggling Dortmund side overturn a bad spell, playing a key role in their recent 4-2 triumph over Mainz to climb out of the dropzone.

United could certainly benefit from a player of Gundogan’s midfield abilities as they aim to capture an FA Cup triumph this season, and are 3/1 to lift this year’s trophy.
