Five 20-goal strikers Louis van Gaal could sign this summer

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has claimed that his squad has not challenged for the Premier League title this season due to the absence of a 20-goal-a-season striker, despite having Radamel Falcao, Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney in his ranks.

The Red Devils, 11/4 with Coral for an FA Cup triumph this year, are currently occupying fourth spot in the top-flight and have a domestic cup quarter-final clash with Arsenal to look forward to in the coming weeks.

Although, Dutchman Van Gaal believes he is currently without a prolific out-and-out striker at Old Trafford.

“It is true,” said Van Gaal. “Robin van Persie cannot deny it, Falcao cannot deny it and Rooney is not playing there much anymore,” said Van Gaal.

“At this moment, we don’t have a striker who scores 20 goals.”

Current strikers Falcao, Rooney and Van Persie have managed to strike just over 20 Premier League goals between them so far this term, proving that United’s Dutch boss may have a point regarding his present stuttering strikeforce.

Following Van Gaal’s comments, Coral writers look at five strikers who have been in prolific goalscoring form this term that Van Gaal could sign in the summer.

Mauro Icardi

Inter Milan’s in-form forward has been sensational this campaign, captivating the Serie A with his dominant displays in front of goal. The astute Argentine could provide United with an astute attacking threat, having used his pace and precision to become one of the most feared hitmen in Europe’s top divisions.

Despite the club’s sporting director having recently denied that Icardi is for sale, in this current transfer climate, a substantial offer could still lure the striker away from Italy.

Jackson Martinez

The 28-year-old Porto poacher is of a similar age to Van Gaal’s current crop of forwards, but he is in a far better run of goalscoring form. Menacing marksman Martinez has already reached the 20-goal mark this campaign, and his power and direct approach is something the Old Trafford outfit could benefit from next season.

Alexandre Lacazette

Ferocious Frenchman Lacazette has fired Lyon to top of the Ligue 1 table, after impressively striking over 20 times this season.

The 23-year-old has plenty of time to improve his attacking attributes, but based on present form in front of goal, the Red Devils could certainly use his abilities next season, after what could be a serious summer shake-up on the red half of Manchester.

Mario Mandzukic

Atletico Madrid’s clinical Croatian was expected to drop in form when departing Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, but the sublime striker has been brilliant during his time in Spain.

Diego Simeone’s La Liga champions are reaping the benefits of putting faith in their towering targetman, with Mandzukic firing in over 20 goals this season. The Atletico attacker isn’t a typical United signing, but his aerial abilities and killer instinct in front of goal have made him a desired frontman in Europe.

Bas Dost

Wolfsburg have experienced a rampant rise to prominence this term in the Bundesliga, climbing to second place, only eight points behind Munich. The Wolves have deadly Dutch dangerman Dost to thank for a meteoric rise in form, with the 25-year-old blasting in an incredible 13 goals in the first two months of this calendar year.

A summer move to Old Trafford is a distinct possibility, with Van Gaal having handed the clinical finisher his first international call-up in August 2012, showing there is a previous connection between the Dutch duo.

United are vying for silverware success in the FA Cup, but a return to the Champions League next season is their priority. They are available at 5/6 to clinch a top four finish as the season draws to a close.
