Can Clyne having snubbed Fergie go all the way for England?

England’s latest call-up is for once, absolutely deserved, 100 per cent. Nathaniel Clyne has been one of the most consistent plaayers at Southampton, 9/4 with Coral for a top four finish, this season, and as a result he has made the England squad, and looks set to start against Slovenia, a game England are odds-on at 4/11 to win.

A couple of years ago, Sir Alex Ferguson told then, Chief Executive David Gill to go and sign Clyne, though, maturely perhaps, he snubbed the chance to be a squad player, and go to St Mary’s instead to play consistently. This season, he has made the most tackles of any other in the premier League, also chipping in with goals – form which has seen Roy Hodgson, eventually pick him for the Three Lions squad, in which he is 9/1 to net anytime against Slovenia.

“My club are doing ever so well, which means everyone’s looking at us. I’ve been playing pretty well too, which means I’ve been given a chance to play for my country,” Clyne said.

“We’ve got a great team spirit and togetherness. The manager has done really well to bring good players in and knit us all together.

“We’re playing good football and, hopefully, it will continue. I’ve seen a few clips of the manager [Koeman], scoring goals from outside the box – he had a shot on him.

“Sometimes he joins in training in the possession games, and he does well. I’ve been told about his history with England.

“I’ve been given my chance now and I am going to make it count. I am ready for any game, really. If it is against Slovenia or Scotland, I will prepare myself and get myself ready for the game.”

There is no doubting whether Clyne sees a future in the England team, and has an eye on making the Euro 2016 squad.

“That’s my aim, to get to the Euros, that’s what I’m going to keep pushing for. If I keep putting in performances and gaining experience like this, it’ll make me a better player, which, hopefully, will get me into that Euros squad.

“My mum has always been there. She took me to games when I was younger. She follows my progress now. She comes to every single game, wishes me luck and gives me positive feedback.

“She was happy when I got called up. She was so delighted. I think she cried when I told her I got a call-up. I am happy to do my family and friends proud,” he continued.

“She’d be over the moon if I started. She’s my No.1 fan, so you can imagine what it would be like.”
