Coral present five expensive Premier League transfer flops
Following news that Paulinho has secured a move from Tottenham, 5/1 with Coral for a top four finish next term, to Guangzhou Evergrande, after a disappointing spell at White Hart Lane, in which he failed to live up to his £17m price tag, Coral review five other expensive Premier League signings who flopped.
Although prolific at AC Milan, the Ukraine striker was largely ineffective at Chelsea, who paid £30m for his signature in 2006. Widely known as Roman Abramovich’s signing, manager Jose Mourinho didn’t want him and Shevchenko failed to adjust.
Another Spurs player who famously flopped. Like compatriot Shevchenko, Rebrov arrived for what was considered a lucrative fee at £11m in 2000, with Tottenham, breaking their transfer record. In 59 Premier League matches he returned just 10 goals.
There was widespread disbelief when Liverpool snapped up Carroll for £35m in January of 2011 from Newcastle; this is still the record fee for an English player. However, with a goal return of just 11 in 58 appearances for the club, the Reds finally cut their losses. After an initial spell on loan at West Ham United, Brendan Rodgers was able to recoup £15m for the centre forward.
If the acquisition of Shevchenko was a sign to Abramovich that he should stay out of transfer dealings and stick to writing cheques, he didn’t heed it. He personally sanctioned a £50m move for striker Torres, bringing him to Chelsea in 2011 where he failed to live up to expectations.
Although the Spaniard did score 45 in 172 for the Blues, more goals were expected for the amount they paid for him, however, he did struggle to adapt to a change of system at Stamford Bridge, having previously done so well playing on the counter-attack at Liverpool.
Having joined Manchester United for £18m in 2007, the Brazilian soon faded at Old Trafford. Although showing early glimpses of promise, he couldn’t keep up with the pace of the Premier League. Perhaps the most shocking statistic out of the previous four players who are listed here, the 27-year-old managed just nine goals in 181 outings.
