Premier League team of matchweek 2: Man City stars heavily feature

Week two of the new Premier League season threw up yet more intriguing results, with champions Chelsea flopping once more and Manchester City continuing their impressive start.

So, after the matches on Friday, Saturday and Sunday were played, Coral pick out our starting XI of stars that impressed us the most.

Goalkeeper: Tim Howard (Everton)

Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Southampton v Everton - St Mary's

His team may have been superb at the end of the pitch, beating Southampton 3-0, but things could’ve gone differently had Howard not saved brilliantly from Sadio Mane with the score goalless.

Right back: Steven Whittaker (Norwich City)
The Canaries (11/8 to be relegated) inflicted a second successive defeat on Sunderland this term, seeing them off 3-1 at the Stadium of Light. Scotsman Whittaker played a big part in that, and grabbed his side’s second goal.

Centre back: Vincent Kompany (Manchester City)
After a somewhat poor season by his standards in 2014/15, Kompany looks back to his best. He followed up his opening day goal against West Bromwich Albion with another against champions Chelsea, and kept a clean sheet along the way.

Centre back: Daley Blind (Manchester United)
United may not be showing great promise going forward, but Blind has been quietly going about his business in an unfavoured position to help the Red Devils to another clean sheet this term. He kept Aston Villa’s new-look attack quiet as his team won 1-0.

Left back: Aleksandar Kolarov (Manchester City)
Another rock at the back for 6/5 title favourites City on the day, his display going forward was also as impressive. He was the cause of much of the Citizens’ attacks.

Defensive midfield: Fernandinho (Manchester City)

Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Manchester City v Chelsea - Etihad Stadium

Brazilian Fernandinho’s cover in midfield was key to his side’s success at the Etihad on Sunday, putting in perhaps his best performance to date in a City shirt. He grabbed a brilliant goal late on too to put the sword into the Blues.

Central midfield: Ross Barkley (Everton)
England starlet Barkley put in a mature show to help the Toffees down the Saints for the first time at St Mary’s in seven matches there. The 21-year-old scored and made an assist.

Attacking midfield: Wes Hoolahan (Norwich City)
Norwich responded brilliantly top their opening day loss to Crystal Palace to topple the Black Cats, and Republic of Ireland international attacker Hoolahan was at the heart of the goals, as he set up two.

Right forward: Andre Ayew (Swansea City)

Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Swansea City v Newcastle United - Liberty Stadium

Ghana international wideman Ayew is really looking a bargain buy from Marseille (free) after another goal helped the Swans get more points for Garry Monk’s men, who beat Newcastle United 2-0.

Striker: Romelu Lukaku (Everton)
His huge fee from the Blues was questioned last season, but he looked like he was worth every penny on Saturday against Southampton. Lukaku bagged a brilliant brace for 10/3 top six shouts Everton.

Left forward: Sergio Aguero (Manchester City)
Argentine ace Aguero may have missed a couple early chances, but he got the opener after the half-hour mark which set City on their way to a crucial early season victory over Chelsea.
