Can Liverpool avoid another shock to bogey team Palace?

Holly Thackeray | 29 October 2016

Crystal Palace are Liverpool’s bogey team – can they cause a shock again?

Just in time for the lead-up to Halloween, Premier League title hopefuls Liverpool face their bete noir as the Reds travel to Selhurst Park and take on the curse of Crystal Palace.

Liverpool’s bogey team, banana skin – call them what you will, but the Eagles have played their part in the Merseysiders’ top-flight fortunes over the past few seasons.

This season, the Liverpudlians are second-favourites for the Premier League title with Coral at 11/4. But it is matches like this one where they must prove they deserve that status.

Take Coral's awesome Liverpool Premier League title odds.

Amazingly, the Reds have won just two of their previous six scuffles with 2015 FA Cup runners-up Palace in all competitions. This includes two notable defeats at Anfield. The Londoners have also sunk their Liverpudlian rivals on three of their past five attempts – a record any side would be proud of.

Remember when the Eagles ruined Steven Gerrard’s last game at Anfield with a 3-1 victory? Have a gander at some match day footage below.

Though, it is perhaps for that famous 3-3 draw back in May 2014, as then Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, a resigned Gerrard and a tearful Luis Suarez were held heroically at Selhurst, for which the Eagles’ edge is best remembered.

Back then the Reds were slowly watching the chance of a first-ever PL title slip away, as defeat to Chelsea had left this fixture as a must win, though the silverware was still Manchester City’s to lose.

You can relive what happened in the video below:

It had all started so well, with Liverpool three goals to the good just after half-time and an own-goal from Damien Delaney adding to Eagles embarrassment.

Then it all changed, as the aforementioned Delaney made amends with what looked a consolation goal, until Dwight Gayle’s late double and several denials by Julian Speroni in net propelled Palace to ecstasy and the Reds to woe.

Now, despite being so early in the season, Palace v Liverpool could prove a decisive encounter once again, for both clubs. Jurgen Klopp’s Reds are 11/1 to repeat Rodgers’ past mistake and lead at half-time but fail to win.

Benteke to bag first for Eagles among Crystal Palace v Liverpool bets

Following last season’s awesome FA Cup run, despite some haggard league form, Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace begin this campaign fairly brightly, but bad form has crept in with no victory in any of their last three outings.

Can a return to their favourite fixture of recent terms get the Eagles back on track? Coral give the capital club a 7/2 chance to stun Liverpool yet again on home soil.

Lucky for Liverpool goal getter Gayle has moved onto Newcastle United now, as the frontman notched an fantastic four strikes in five career appearances against them.

Remind yourself of a Gayle goal blow v Liverpool:

Recently, despite Pardew coaxing Crystal Palace into playing good football, a lack of cutting edge up top has proven to be their downfall. But that was supposed to change with a certain summer striker splurge.

The Reds will be wary, however, of a reunion with former forward Christian Benteke after flogging the Belgian poacher to Palace. It would be typical for this tussle to see Palace’s leading man take a starring role against the club where he previously flopped, and Benteke is 13/5 to be first home team scorer.

Will Benteke haunt his old club?

Will Benteke haunt his old club?

Belgium international Benteke has bagged three goals for his new club so far, but it would be theatrical for him to come full circle and complete his quest to find full form against the team where he lost it.

Reds can take important step in Liverpool Premier League title odds

Coral writers have already asked the question whether Liverpool can stay the pace in the Premier league this season? And a fair few quibbles could be answered if the Reds can lay this Eagles ghost to rest.

If Jurgen Klopp’s crew are to clinch the title, or stay in the race, this is a key clash to overcome – to show they have really kicked on.

West Bromwich Albion were a previous thorn in the Anfield outfit’s side, even under Klopp last campaign, but the Baggies were put to bed last time out, as you can glimpse in the highlights.

Liverpool did pinch a win at Selhurst last term, with a winning goal from that boy Benteke, and are odds-on 8/11 favourites to do so again. Or a better value 23/10 to win and both teams score, with the two teams on target in all of their last eight encounters.

In really rampant form, level on 20 points with Man City and Arsenal, and mere goal difference from straddling the summit themselves – it is crucial to keep momentum going.

Sturridge is in form.

Sturridge is in form.

Beaten just once across all competitions this campaign, and with a 20-goal haul in the PL thanks to a fluid and energetic inter-changing attack containing Philippe Coutinho, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and co – Klopp has created a formidable side.

Silly points dropped would be detrimental to confidence with Liverpool riding the crest of a wave, but three points nabbed at this bogey ground would show the Reds have the kind of mettle they missed last term. It might be best to snap up those 11/4 Liverpool Premier League title odds up now, before they shorten if Liverpool win.

In-form duo Daniel Sturridge and Adam Lallana both have history of scoring past Palace, and with the latter fresh from an EFL Cup brace that downed Tottenham last time out, you can back him at even-money to add another anytime.
