Furious Louis van Gaal voices Victor Valdes is free to join Liverpool

Manchester United (12/1 with Coral to win the title) have been allowing Barcelona’s Champions League winning goalkeeper, Victor Valdes, to train with the club this season, as the Spaniard looks to rediscover his fitness and form ahead of a hopeful Premier League move.

However, despite the former Barcelona number one being heavily involved with United’s training regimes, United boss Louis van Gaal, has blasted questions about the former Spain international’s future in England.

Ahead of his side’s trip to Villa Park at the weekend, the former Netherlands boss was angered when asked about talk of Valdes’ involvement with the club, declaring the 32-year-old is free to join bitter rivals Liverpool.

“It’s only talk from you,” said Van Gaal. “Not from us, not from Valdes, only the media. I’m not here to inform the media. You have to wait and listen and see.

“If Liverpool are interested, he goes to Liverpool. The media are suggesting and that’s a big mistake. That’s why I’m always angry because you are inventing stories. There are no stories.

“He is training here. I give him the possibility to do that. We shall see.”

Valdes faces a tough time ahead in the search for a new club, with Van Gaal suggesting he may have no future in the Red of Manchester, but a move across to Merseyside could be another possibility.

Coral take a look at the positives and negatives for Valdes possibly making the move to Premier League side’s Manchester United or Liverpool.

Manchester United
With fellow Spaniard, David De Gea, in sublime form this season for United, Valdes is left with several big decisions. If the former La Liga star is to join Van Gaal at Old Trafford, he would bring a wealth of experience and open the door for possibily giving De Gea some rest during a long season, or maybe even selling the superb stopper.

Real Madrid have long been admirers of United’s stalwart hero this campaign, with his acrobatic saves and stunning performances attracting interest from the Bernabeu giants.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side have been subject of a record-breaking bid for Old Trafford’s number one, and with Valdes on the books, United could benefit from a free goalkeeper plus cash to spend on defensive reinforcements.

The problem for the Spanish stopper is if De Gea commits to his current club, he’ll face a long spell on the bench, with the Red Devils’ keeper becoming undroppable in present form.

United’s great run of form see’s them take up the last Champions League spot, with seven consecutive victories sending them to fourth in the table, meaning a return to Europe’s biggest competition is very likely. A tasty proposition for Valdes, who may yet join up with the high-flying Red Devils.

Liverpool
Angry Van Gaal rejected rumours that Valdes would join his team, leaving the door open for a move across the Mersey to rivals Liverpool. At Anfield, the experienced goalkeeper would definitely be rewarded with more first-team appearances, after Simon Mignolet’s below-par performances this term in Liverpool’s slump to 11th in the Premier League table.

Having been dropped for Brad Jones after a woeful start to the season, Belgium international Mignolet is reportedly facing a permanent axe by Reds boss Brendan Rodgers. Talented Valdes would reap the benefits of regular football at Liverpool and would provide Rodgers with some much-needed stability at the back, with the Anfield outfit having conceded 22 league goals already this term.

The downside for World Cup winner Valdes is the lack of Champions League football, with Rodgers’ Reds crashing out of Europe’s elite club competition at the hands of Basel. Liverpool’s current league position doesn’t encourage a quick return next season.

Merseyside outfit Liverpool (5/1 for a top four finish) have crumbled this campaign, mainly due to their unavailing back line, but with Van Gaal announcing Valdes’ apparent availability, the Reds could start their recovery with a cunning capture from United.
