Tabloid reports suggest that Manchester United are willing to treble Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos’ wages to £250k-a-week.
Following the recent record-breaking Wayne Rooney £300k-a-week contract and £37.1m Juan Mata transfer deals, it looks as if United are ready to spend big again, as they look to turn around their fortunes starting in the summer.
David Moyes’ side are currently down in sixth in the Premier League – ahead of Everton on goal-difference (they have a game in hand) – but are still 11 points off Liverpool, who currently occupy the fourth Champions League spot. You can back the Red Devils at 7/1 to finish in the top four at the end of the season.
Kroos had been an ever-present in the Bundesliga this term, right up until February where he was dropped to the bench for two of Munich’s games. This led to speculation that manager Pep Guardiola is willing to let the 24-year-old leave in the summer.
The former Barcelona boss even recently stated about the 41-capped German international: “He is an important player. But it can go fast in football. Here today, there tomorrow.”
Kroos has now slipped down the order behind the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Thiago Alcantara and even usual full back Philipp Lahm in recent weeks, and with his contract running out in 2015, Guardiola seems to be utilising the players whose futures are certain.
Champions League favourites Bayern (15/8) will still command a £30m fee for the midfielder, but following Kroos’ stunning goal against Arsenal in the 2-0 away win, his Spanish manager seemed to have changed his mind.
“We all want him to prolong [his stay], and he also wants that, I am very positive about it. The club, we all want that,” Guardiola said.
Man Utd will do whatever they can to sign a player of Kroos’ quality, and have also been linked with fellow German international Ilkay Gundogan.
