Arsenal edge epic at Anfield

After a terrific televised battle between Newcastle United and Manchester United the night before, surely we couldn’t see another between Liverpool and Arsenal in Wednesday’s Premier League fixture?

These two teams arguably produced an even more exciting occasion, as four goals in the first-half set up an eventual 3-3 thriller.

Firmino begins first-half goal blitz

Home side Liverpool started brightest, and they were soon rewarded after Roberto Firmino pounced on a rebounded effort from Emre Can in the 10th minute.

The Brazilian kept calm to finish with his left foot and through the legs of Laurent Koscielny following Petr Cech’s palm away.

However, just four minutes later and completely against the run of play, Joel Campbell found Aaron Ramsey in the box with a brilliant ball for the Welshman to slot past Simon Mignolet.

It was certainly end-to-end action from then on, and Firmino scored one of the goals of the season to curl it around Cech in the 20th minute after linking up with James Milner.

Blink and you’ll miss! Ramsey attempted to swing the pendulum back the visitors’ way, as he lobbed Mignolet only for Mamadou Sakho to clear off the line and head over.

The two sides of Giroud

But the Welshman then took the corner and found out Giroud at the near post, ahead of Sakho this time, to poke home and level the scores to 2-2 after just 25 minutes on the clock.

The two teams were highly charged at this point, and Giroud could and should have given the Gunners the lead just minutes later, but somehow he was unable to convert from inside the six-yard box with just the net in front of him.

Both sides had chances just before the break, with Firmino in particular coming closest again, but the half-time whistle couldn’t have come any sooner with the players and viewers all needing a breather or nap after what they witnessed.

Giroud edges Arsenal ahead

The second-half began as the first finished, with chances from either end, but Campbell and Alberto Moreno smashed over their respective efforts.

It took the same amount of minutes (10) for the first goal of the second-half as the first, and Giroud made amends for his earlier woeful miss to put his side ahead and grab his second on the night.

The France forward did well to turn a rooted Kolo Toure, to finish in the bottom corner of the net.

Liverpool were certainly not going to give up, and Moreno and Firmino came close with efforts again just before the 70th minute.

Unlikely Allen ensures point

It was a snowy end to the match, to perhaps cool the players down after an energetic contest, and even QPR loanee Steven Caulker came on for the Reds, but Joe Allen was the man at the death to reheat the Anfield crowd’s hearts to volley past Cech.

Though there were three goals fewer in the second period of the game, the tempo and excitement didn’t really drop, but the Gunners managed to hold onto top spot in the Premier League, equal on points with Leicester City who beat Tottenham.
