Man Utd seek further Toon success
Fresh off the back of an unconvincing FA Cup victory over Sheffield United, Manchester United will now look to extend their rampant record over Newcastle United in a midweek Premier League trip to St James’ Park.
The Toon have managed to win on just one occasion in their previous eight encounters with the Red Devils in all competitions, with this week’s away side having prevailed six times in those clashes.
Louis van Gaal’s men narrowly overcame Sheffield Utd 1-0 to book a place in the FA Cup third round recently and are 9/5 with Coral to secure victory to nil once again this time around on their return to domestic duties.
Struggling Magpies fighting for their lives
Steve McClaren’s Magpies have endured a torrid campaign so far and currently occupy the third and final relegation position, but a win over their constant conquerors on home soil (15/4) would lift them out of that daunting position, at least until Swansea City play next.
Although, the hosts’ recent home record against Man Utd doesn’t bode well for confidence at this crucial stage of the season, having lost their previous three meetings at St James’ Park without scoring a single goal.
The last time Newcastle did manage to score against their latest opponents it was frontman Papiss Cisse that struck in a 3-1 defeat at Old Trafford last term, but the Senegal striker is absent through injury. Aleksandar Mitrovic will therefore lead the line and is 15/8 to dispatch anytime, while Newcastle’s star man Georginio Wijnaldum is 2/1 to get on the scoresheet.
Man Utd seek performance boost without injured stars
Man Utd’s win over Sheffield Utd came at a cost, as midfield anchorman Bastian Schweinsteiger, who was one of few players to enjoy a solid weekend outing, picked up a knee injury and is ruled out of the Toon encounter.
The 31-year-old Germany international will join Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo and Antonio Valencia on the sidelines, but Morgan Schneiderlin, Michael Carrick and Ashley Young are all set to return to action after being rested.
Rooney to extend rampant record over Toon?
Wayne Rooney fired in the decisive last-gasp penalty in that recent cup victory and the Red Devils skipper is 4/1 to open proceedings in a fixture that he truly relishes.
The England all-time marksman has scored more career goals against only Aston Villa (15) and Arsenal (14) than he has in clashes with Newcastle (12), and his recent rejuvenation suggests he could add to that impressive career tally in his latest Toon trip.
Meanwhile, Memphis Depay could be in line for a start after an encouraging substitute outing last time out and the Dutchman is 6/5 to net anytime, while French teenager is 4/1 to strike last.

Coral’s top tip: Back Wayne Rooney to score first at 4/1 and extend his great record over Newcastle United.
