Maxim for life: Swans to reinvest Bony bonanza on Stuttgart star

Swansea City, 11/1 with Coral for a top six finish, may spend some of the £28m windfall they are to receive from selling top scorer Wilfried Bony to Premier League champions Manchester City on Stuttgart attacking midfielder Alexandru Iulian Maxim, according to today’s press.

The Romania international 24, has laid on four assists in the Bundesliga this term, but also endured a stop-start season with his current club.

Capable of playing on either flank as well as off the front, Maxim made the switch to Stuttgart in the winter window two years ago from domestic Romanian football.

What may motivate Swans manager Garry Monk’s reported interest in this creative player is how his side have been heavily reliant on Iceland international Gylfi Sigurdsson for guile and assists.

Scoring two goals in 19 caps for his country, Maxim would follow in the footsteps of fellow Romania internationals Vlad Chiriches and Florin Gardos in making recent Premier League switches, if Swansea’s £5m bid is successful.

In other Liberty Stadium news, reports suggest that Crystal Palace (2/1 chances to be relegated) are edging nearer to coughing up the £8m valuation of Swans striker Bafetimbi Gomis.

Despite playing second fiddle to Bony before his sale to City, the French target man is attracting interest from other Premier League sides. Eagles boss Alan Pardew landed Arsenal attacker Yaya Sanogo on loan for the rest of the season earlier this week, but is keen to strengthen his forward options further.

Letting Gomis follow Bony out of south Wales would be disturbing for Swansea supporters, especially as their only other senior forwards are Marvin Emnes, a hot and cold player, and Nelson Oliveira, on loan from Benfica.

Maxim may be able to ease the pressure on Sigurdsson, and wide trio Nathan Dyer, Jefferson Montero and Wayne Routledge, but another striking option appears essential, especially with Michu out injured while on loan at Serie A side Napoli.

The Swans are odds-on at 8/13 to finish the campaign in the top half, but that price will lengthen if Gomis goes without at least one replacement being brought in.
