Newcastle latest: Janmaat joins, raid for Riviere wrapping up
Newcastle United, 6/4 for a top 10 finish, have reportedly signed Netherlands right back Daryl Janmaat from Eredivisie outfit Feyenoord for an undisclosed fee, thought to be in the region of £5m to £6m, according to the local press.
Janmaat, 24, has reportedly penned a long-term contract at St James’ Park, becoming the fifth signing of the summer made by Magpies manager Alan Pardew. His arrival on Tyneside is hugely likely to offset France counterpart Mathieu Debuchy’s departure to Arsenal.
With almost 150 Eredivisie games under his belt, Janmaat offers plenty of experience for a relative youngster. He has 21 caps for the Netherlands.
At Newcastle, Janmaat joins compatriot Tim Krul and versatile pair Vurnon Anita and Siem de Jong, a fellow new signing, after being part of the Dutch squad that finished third at the World Cup under Louis van Gaal. Spanish forward Ayoze Perez, former Sunderland midfielder Jack Colback and Montpellier attacker Remy Cabella are the other new names brought in by Pardew.
In other Magpies news, former France Under-21 forward Emmanuel Riviere is closing in on a reported £6m move from Monaco, as he has medical on Tyneside.
Pardew is set to bolster his attack with another versatile player, as Riviere, also 24, is capable of operating up front or on either wing. He was likely to find first-team opportunities more limited at Monaco under Leonardo Jardim, as Lacina Traore is back in the principality following a loan spell at Everton.
Riviere would have to compete with Ivorian giant Traore, Dimitar Berbatov and Radamel Falcao when the Colombian hitman returns from injury. Instead, he is set to throw his lot in with Newcastle and become the latest name to link up with their French connection.
The additions of Cabella and Riviere will bring the total number of names from across the Channel up to nine. Pardew could have a dozen French speakers on the Toon’s books. Newcastle are 66/1 shots to crash the top four.
