Olivier Giroud goal record can ignite Arsenal away to Newcastle
Arsenal have grabbed just two goals this Premier League season so far but, if recent history is to be an indicator, a trip to face Newcastle United should revive the Londoners and, in particular, frontman Olivier Giroud.
The goal-hungry Gunners have defeated the Magpies in all of their past seven meetings, racking up 19 strikes across those encounters. So, customers can back a stop at St James’ Park to be just the tonic Arsene Wenger’s side needs, with Arsenal 11/5 to notch three or more, and odds-on at 4/6 for victory.
For poacher Giroud in particular, Tyneside has been a happy hunting ground, with six goals in his four previous outings against the Northeast outfit, and an astonishing eight in six career games against them.
Furthermore, the France forward appears to bring the rub of the green for the Gunners against Newcastle, as the striker has never been on the losing side versus the Magpies, instead celebrating victory on every occasion.
This makes Arsenal’s leading man Giroud 4/1 to fire home first against the St James’ Park side for the third time on the trot, or an equally tempting 5/1 to smash his second successive brace past them.
Should punters wish to take alternative attacking odds in Arsenal’s favour, Alexis Sanchez is 5/1 to have the final say, having threatened repeatedly to get off the mark for this campaign. Meanwhile, speedsters Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were both brought off the bench to inject pace against Liverpool last time out, so are respective evens and 10/3 chances in the anytime market.
As for the Magpies, despite the optimism surrounding new signings and coach Steve McClaren, there is little evidence results-wise to show much change from last season’s shambles. Still with just one win in their last 14 league games, and none yet this campaign, the hosts are unlikely shouts at 17/4 for a victory here.
Stats aside, McClaren’s men illustrated impressive spirit to recently hold Manchester United at Old Trafford, and have drawn two of their three league games so far, meaning splitting the spoils at St James’ is a better 11/4 chance.
As their recent recruits continue to settle, there are many reasons for the Toon Army to be optimistic. Attacking midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has got off to a flying start and is 4/1 to strike anytime, while Frenchman Florian Thauvin, who notched the opening goal in the Capital One Cup thrashing of Northampton, is the same price.
At 8/1 to break the deadlock, and his Premier League duck, Magpies marksman Aleksandar Mitrovic is also great value, as he came agonisingly close previously at Old Trafford.
Betting tip: It’s got to be Giroud @ 4/1 to grab the opener for the Gunners.
