Red Devils closing in on signing of Benfica’s Argentine star Gaitan

Manchester United have already delved into the transfer market early this year, capturing PSV winger Memphis Depay, and another deal could soon be agreed as reports suggest Benfica’s Argentine playmaker Nicolas Gaitan is set to arrive at Old Trafford.

The 27-year-old has been long tipped for a switch to the red half of Manchester, with this transfer saga dating back several years before the Argentina international had risen to prominence in Portugal, but talks between clubs are believed to have begun.

Gaitan is undoubtedly one of the most exciting attackers in Europe, with a host of other top European clubs such as Chelsea having also been rumoured to be keeping an eye on him, but the Portuguese media have suggested terms have already been agreed for an Old Trafford switch.

A £21m fee has been talked up, with Portuguese giants Benfica seemingly happy to cash in on their sought-after forward while he’s in stunning form, while United are aiming to boost their strikeforce for next season (9/2 with Coral to win 2015/16 PL).

The Boca Juniors youth product could be seen as a replacement for under-fire fellow countryman Angel di Maria at United, with the former Real Madrid assist-king struggling towards the end of the Premier League campaign, despite starting in blistering form.

Although, a link-up with Di Maria may be a more attractive proposition for Gaitan, with Marcos Rojo completing the Argentinian contingency at the club, while Ecuadorian Antonio Valenica and Brazilian Rafael da Silva make up a strong South American base in their ranks.

Since receiving the Portuguese Breakthrough Player of the Year for the country’s domestic league, in 2011 due to his dazzling displays at the Estadio da Luz, Gaitan has went on to become a star attraction at the club, helping to guide them to two consecutive Europa League finals in recent years, only to fall at the last hurdle.

However, the potent playmaker was also awarded with the Galardo Cosme Damiao last year, an accolade given to the best player in the Portuguese Primeira Liga, having secured back-to-back domestic titles this season.

The left footed winger has been in sublime form this term, striking four goals, but his main attacking attributes come from a great creative instinct when drifting in from a wide position, leading to his superb 16 assists in all competitions this season.

Having already signed deadly Dutchman Depay, Van Gaal could soon be closing in on the services of astute Argentine Gaitan, with a deal seemingly close to being agreed.
