Spurs seek swap deal for Fabian Delph and offer Holtby to Villa

Spurs, 7/4 shots with Coral to finish in the top six this term, continue to pursue Aston Villa and England midfielder Fabian Delph and head coach Mauricio Pochettino is prepared to offer Lewis Holtby as bait.

Delph, who has just turned 25, may not play again this year due to injury, but could quit relegation-threatened Villa, who have settled into a cycle of perpetual struggle since Martin O’Neill left in 2010.

Tottenham misfit Holtby, 24, meanwhile, is currently on a season-long loan back in the Bundesliga at Hamburg. That spell could be terminated, however, if the London club cash in on the three-time capped Germany international.

Holtby has struggled to make an impact in the Premier League, scoring twice in 38 matches for Hotspur and Fulham, where he spent the back end of last season on loan.

Pochettino is keen to put his stamp on Spurs, with French pair Etienne Capoue and Benjamin Stambouli competing with injury-prone Belgium international Mousa Dembele and academy product Ryan Mason to start in deep-lying berths at White Hart Lane.

Delph made his senior international debut for England this season, playing on the left of Roy Hodgson’s midfield diamond to great effect against Switzerland in the first Euro 2016 qualifier. Although he can play further forward, he has settled into a more defensive role for current club Villa.

Previously linked with Delph’s teammate Christian Benteke from the West Midlands outfit, Tottenham are also seeking attacking reinforcements. If they can establish a good relationship with Villa, then the big Belgium striker could follow suit.

Much has fallen on the shoulders of England Under-21 striker Harry Kane, as Spanish flop Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor have failed to live up to their big reputations at Spurs.

These struggles in front of goal have seen Tottenham slip down the table and, as a result, they are relative outsiders at 8/1 to finish in the top four.
