Newcastle host Toffees on Boxing Day
In one of Boxing Day’s late Premier League kick-offs, Steve McClaren’s Newcastle United welcome Everton to St James’ Park hoping to put the frustrations from a previous 1-1 draw with rock-bottom side Aston Villa behind them.
Villa may sit in the most bleak position in the table, but the Toon currently reside just two points above the drop zone and need three crucial points on home soil after Christmas in order to restore some confidence and momentum.
McClaren’s Magpies did impressively overcome Liverpool and Tottenham and were expected to make it three consecutive wins against Villa, but had to settle for a point in the pouring rain on Tyneside, but they are 19/10 with Coral to get back on track with another victory this time out.
McClaren rallies Magpies faithful
Newcastle missed many chances to go ahead in their previous battle and McClaren admitted he can relate to the fans’ frustration, but has called upon their faithful following to rally behind them against Roberto Martinez’s Toffees, who are 18/5 to triumph.
“It’s three games, seven points, we’d have taken that well before the Liverpool game,” stated the former England boss. “So we have just got to continue, that’s gone and it’s Everton next – tough, tough opponents and a very good team.
“The crowd, the majority of the time, were excellent against Aston Villa. They were horrendous conditions, it was a real level playing field the game and everybody got soaked and were frustrated at times, so we have just got to press on against Everton.
“The crowd are going to be important again on Boxing Day. We are going to need them right behind us.”
Exciting clash can be expected
For the hosts, Aleksandar Mitrovic has finally started to showcase his true talents, despite an aggressive nature on the pitch, and he is 7/4 to strike anytime on home turf. Meanwhile, Dutch midfield maestro Georginio Wijnaldum is 2/1 to get on the scoresheet, having been the star of Newcastle’s season to date.
Although, the visitors will have deal with the attacking threat of in-form Toffees marksman Romelu Lukaku, who is 6/1 to net two or more this time around, with a £20 max stake, after firing in 16 goals in all competitions so far.
Talented England international playmaker Ross Barkley will also carry a forward danger to the Toon rear guard, and he is 7/1 to bag the game’s last goal in this intriguing Boxing Day encounter in the Premier League.
