Tottenham can break into top six with Newcastle win

Tottenham entertain Newcastle, hoping to build on a 4-1 defeat by Man City last time out in the Premier League. To their credit, they did respond as well as could be expected in midweek, with a 5-1 victory against Asteras Tripolis.

So many talking points from both matches, though it would perhaps be churlish to gloss over the hat-trick from Harry Kane, or the incredibly daring ‘rabona’ spectacular from Erik Lamela.

Spurs are odds-on at 8/11 with Coral to win the match, while the away side, who have actually found a bit of form recently, winning four points from their last two games, are 4/1 to cause an upset. Gabriel Obertan produced a shock goal as the Magpies nicked three points from the Foxes, and is 5/1 to net another anytime.

For Mauricio Pochettino’s men, it is actually Belgian attacker Nacer Chadli who is their league top scorer with four, and he is a respectable 15/8 chance in the anytime market. Kane, meanwhile, is Spurs’ leading marksman in all competitions, though with all seven strikes coming in the Europa League and Capital One Cup, is 9/2 to open the scoring.

Pochettino, however, may decide to rotate, and go with either Emmanuel Adebayor or Roberto Soldado, with the former 4/1 to net the first goal, and the Spanish striker 9/2. Lamela, meanwhile, is a decent 11/4 chance in the anytime market to build on his midweek showing.

Newcastle actually recorded a 1-0 win at White Hart Lane last term, almost one year ago to the day. Odds of a repeat scoreline are not, on reflection, realistic at 16/1, given the away side’s reputation for conceding goals so far this term.

Striker Papiss Cisse leads the scoring charts for the Toon, currently on four, and he is 2/1 to find the way to goal anytime.

Speaking about Lamela’s wonder goal in midweek, Pochettino responded: “It was a great goal, maybe the best by one of my players.”

No doubt he’ll want more of the same against Newcastle.
