Transfer Latest: Defensive trio set for Premier League sides
Defensive trio Toby Alderweireld, Sebastian Coates and Zeki Fryers are set for moves to Premier League clubs on Deadline Day – to Southampton, Sunderland and Crystal Palace respectively.
The Saints, 11/8 top 10 chances, are in talks to sign centre back Toby Alderweireld on a season-long loan from La Liga champions Atletico Madrid, according to reports, with the likes of Newcastle United and the Black Cats previous suitors.
Belgium World Cup star Alderweireld would be a real coup for the Saints, who have lost defenders Dejan Lovren, Luke Shaw and Calum Chambers this summer. Despite being highly-rated, the 25-year-old was only a bit-part player for Atleti last term, but can expect more game time in the English south coast. He can play in the centre or on the right of defence.
Boss Ronald Koeman confirmed: “I am still looking to bring in two more players, an attacker and a defender. Toby Alderweireld will undergo a medical today, hopefully we can also add another attacker. I can’t say who we are working on.”
Liverpool defender Coates, meanwhile, is in talks with 9/2 relegation candidates Sunderland, also over a season-long loan. The Uruguayan has had an injury-hit spell since joining the Reds, and has slipped well down the pecking order behind the likes of Lovren, Martin Skrtel, Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Toure.
The 23-year-old giant centre back, who was in his country’s World Cup squad, could link up with compatriot Black Cats boss Gus Poyet.
Coates’ teammate Lucas Leiva may also be on his way out of the club, with Napoli and Galatasaray reportedly interested in the Brazilian midfielder.
Former Manchester United youth graduate Fryers, meanwhile, is the subject of a transfer from Tottenham to fellow Londoners Crystal Palace (11/8 to be relegated), with the left back falling behind new signing Ben Davies and England call-up Danny Rose in the order.
Still just 21 years of age, the youngster could resurrect his promising career at a club with fewer competition for places.
