Transfer latest: Swans land Carroll on loan, Samaras joins Baggies

Swansea City, 15/2 chances with Coral for Premier League relegation, have landed Tottenham midfielder Tom Carroll on a season-long loan, continuing the exchange of players between the two clubs this summer.

Spurs sent Iceland international Gylfi Sigurdsson to Garry Monk’s men in part-exchange for Wales left back Ben Davies, while Netherlands goalie Michel Vorm also left the Liberty for White Hart Lane.

England Under-21 international Carroll embarks upon his fourth loan stint away from Tottenham, but first in the Premier League. He spent time on loan at Championship play-off winners QPR last term.

Carroll’s temporary exit from Spurs could further fuel speculation that head coach Mauricio Pochettino could go back to former club Southampton to sign wantaway France midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin. The Saints insist he is not for sale, however, and Tottenham have a number of existing options for their engine room.

Algeria international Nabil Bentaleb, Belgium’s Mousa Dembele, French anchor Etienne Capoue, German playmaker Lewis Holtby, plus Brazilian pair Paulinho and Sandro are all competing for midfield spots in north London.

Swans manager Monk, meanwhile, is facing something of a crisis in that area of his squad. Having missed out on signing Netherlands international Jonathan de Guzman on a permanent basis, he only has two fit and available options, Jonjo Shelvey and Ki Sung-Yueng.

Club stalwart Leon Britton remains injured, while Spanish destroyer Joe Canas has consistently been linked with leaving the Liberty. La Liga side Elche reportedly want him to replace Colombia international Carlos Sanchez, who signed for Aston Villa last week.

In other news, Greece striker Georgios Samaras, formerly of Celtic, has penned a two-year contract at Swansea’s relegation rivals West Bromwich Albion (12/5 to go down). Baggies boss Alan Irvine was in the market for new attacking options, and turned to the tall and versatile 29-year-old to provide competition for Victor Anichebe, Saido Berahino and Brown Ideye at The Hawthorns.
