Royal Ascot: Aljazzi and Cracksman to star on Day Two
Cian Carroll | 20 June 2018
Preview and tips for all six races…
It was a difficult day for punters on day one of Royal Ascot as two of the big favourites were chinned at the Berkshire course.
Lady Aurelia and Rhododendron were both well beaten. And punters will be looking for a better time of it on day two.
There’s a host of cracking renewals, too, with a Group 1, three Group 2s, and a Group 3 race to sink our teeth into.
The Coral News Team preview three of the races and tip up all six contests…
Eyes will be peeled to see if Aidan O’Brien’s Hydrangea can get her comeback back on track after an iffy performance on her seasonal reappearance.
And that may leave the door open for Aljazzi to steal a march on her classy rival. Marco Botti’s charge was second in this race last year and looks primed to go one better this time around.
She won a Group 3 at Sandown back in September and was an impressive third in a Group 2 at the same course in April.
Back amongst fillies and mares here, it’s there for the taking. Botti’s reportedly been eyeing this race up for a while. And now could be the time to properly shine.
Favourites may have underwhelmed yesterday. But surely Cracksman justifies his odds in the feature race of the day?
John Gosden’s charge is one of the stars of flat racing and has won on his last five starts. That includes an incredible performance to win the Champion Stakes at Ascot back in October.
The four-year-old will again face foes Poet’s World, plus Cliffs Of Moher and Hawksbill here. But, if he runs to anywhere near his potential, he should hose up.
There are slight worries after a slightly underwhelming performance at Epsom. But connections say he much prefers Ascot and that’s good enough for us.
Day three (two) of Royal Ascot finishes off with an exciting Jersey Stakes. Run over 7f, this renewal features a host of exciting prospects.
The likes of Could It Be Love, Emaraaty, and Expert Eye head the betting. But there’s an interesting bet a little further down in James Garfield.
George Scott’s charge has been lined up for this Group 3 race for a while now. He’s been raced at a mile and 6f in recent months, but this trip is arguably where his best performances come.
The Exceed And Excel colt made a cracking start to his three-year-old campaign with a win in the Greenham Stakes at Newbury over this distance.
He’ll have to carry a 5lbs penalty but he’s an exceptionally talented horse and should be in with a chance today at big odds.
