Shearer says: “Liverpool were better than Man City in every way.”

Coral ambassador discusses Reds’ Champions League win

I was very impressed with the way Liverpool went after Manchester City from the opening whistle at Anfield and there is no question they thoroughly deserved the result.

They were much better than their opponents in every single department.

All of the key players in the Manchester City team, the likes of David Silva, Kevin de Bruyne and Leroy Sane, just had an off night and were dominated in their position.

They have had a great season but they just did not deliver in this game.

Liverpool have to be given a lot of credit for the way they stopped Manchester City from playing. They pressurised them from the start and City could not handle it.

When you look at the two players of the season, De Bruyne and Salah, it was Salah who was superb in this game which could go a long way in determining who wins the award for Player of the Year.

I know Salah had to go off with injury but when he was on the pitch, he was simply outstanding.

I think it would take a brave person to say this tie is over, despite the scoreline.

If City get an early goal in the second leg, it will make it very interesting.

Liverpool will have to assess the injury to Salah, it would be a huge blow if he was to miss the next game, while Jordan Henderson will be out through suspension after he picked up another yellow card.

Liverpool will be a threat for anybody still left in the competition if they do qualify after the second leg. When you see them play the way they did against Manchester City, it is remarkable that they are not challenging for the Premier League title.

They totally dominated a team that has been head and shoulders above the rest of the division this season.

City could have been there for two days and they would not have scored as Liverpool were just rock solid at the back.

Magic Madrid

I thought Real Madrid were superb on Tuesday evening against Juventus.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s second goal was breathtaking. He was nearly eight foot off the ground when he hit the ball.

He is a superb footballer and he always delivers in these big games.

If you look at the most likely semi-finalists, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid are all set to qualify and they are the teams we expected to be there when the competition began.
