Five shocking penalty misses

Premier League side West Bromwich Albion needed penalties in their FA Cup fourth round replay in order to overcome League One outfit Peterborough, and it was a shootout that produced a host of shocking efforts.

During the spot-kicks, Posh striker Lee Angol had his attempt saved by Ben Foster, while his teammate Martin Samuelsen also had his 12-yard effort denied. Baggies midfielder Darren Fletcher also sent his hopeless penalty wide of the mark, but his progressed side are 25/1 with Coral to lift the cup this season.

Such a poor standard shootout got Coral’s football experts thinking about who else in recent history has missed high-stakes spot-kicks? We got our heads together and came up with five similar instances, complete with videos below..

David Beckham (Euro 2004 quarter-final)

Following a 2-2 draw after extra time against tournament hosts Portugal, then-Three Lions skipper Beckham, as you can see below, blasted England’s opening penalty way over the bar in the shoot-out.

To be fair to Becks, he wasn’t the only player to miss, with Darius Vassell following suit. The Navigators rubbed salt in Lions’ wounds, however, when goalie Ricardo Pereira netted the winner from 12 yards.

Andriy Shevchenko (2005 Champions League final)

Ex-Ukraine striker Shevchenko’s career started on a downward curve when his penalty was easily saved by Liverpool keeper Jezry Dudek, wobbly legs in the best Bruce Grobbelaar traditions and all.

AC Milan were 3-0 and cruising in Istanbul at half time, but an inspired Reds fightback forced penalties in what is widely considered one of the best Champions League finals ever. Relive highlights below.

Gareth Southgate (Euro ’96 semi-final)

England and Germany are bitter football rivals, so centre back Southgate became public enemy number one by being the only taker to see his effort saved from a dozen penalties in this semi-final shoot-out.

Roberto Baggio (1994 World Cup final)

If you think Beckham skyed his kick, then Italy forward Baggio almost booted his penalty out of the stadium on the biggest stage there is. The Azzurri lost this final to Brazil in the USA, with this miss costing them in the shootout.

John Terry (2008 Champions League final)

Chelsea captain Terry slipped at the crucial moment in Moscow, to extend the Blues’ European Cup shoot-out with Manchester United, which the Red Devils then won when Nicolas Anelka’s kick was saved. Terry went on to win Europe’s elite club competition in 2012, however, to redeem himself.
